Calgary father pleads guilty to slashing baby
By Daryl Slade, Calgary Herald December 13, 2011 1:06 PM
CALGARY — A Calgary father who faced a charge of attempted murder in the slashing of his 11-month-old son with a kitchen knife has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault.
The 32-year-old man made his plea through lawyer Alain Hepner on Tuesday.
Sentencing arguments will be presented along with an agreed statement of facts on Feb. 3.
“We’d like a mental health assessment, including psychological, psychiatric and risk assessment — whatever the doctor feels is necessary — and a pre-sentence report,” said provincial court Judge George Gaschler.
“I believe the more information the sentencing judge has, the better it is.”
Crown prosecutor Margot Engley, who agreed to the plea following discussions with Hepner, said the attempted murder charge will not proceed but will remain alive on the indictment for now.
The father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, had been initially charged only with attempted murder but last month Engley added the second charge of aggravated assault.
The new charge was laid just three days after the father was found fit to stand trial after a 60-day psychiatric observation.
Police were called to the family’s home in the 1000 block of Cranston Drive S.E. at about 4 a.m. on Aug. 13 after receiving a 911 call from the agitated father.
The boy, who is expected to fully recover, was quickly rushed to hospital suffering slashes to the throat and abdomen.
Police said the boy’s 26-year-old mother wasn’t home during the attack.
Three of the father’s adult relatives were in court supporting him for his plea.
