Shocked family of a baby girl killed allegedly at the hands of her father are trying to come to terms with the loss of a life taken too soon.
Almost a week after four-month-old Zaria McCall died in hospital from head injuries police said she sustained in her home, her father Julian Thomson, 21, has been charged with second degree murder.
The baby girl had been taken to hospital in Red Deer by a parent last Friday then flown to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton where she died early the next day.
News of the baby’s tragic death and the charge against Thomson has left his family shocked and saddened, including the accused’s dad, Derek Eklund.
He hasn’t yet spoken to his son and said he doesn’t wish to right now.
“My granddaughter is gone,” he said from his Camrose, Alta., home.
“I will remember holding her, it’s a love at first sight sort of thing.
“I’m going to miss her severely — with this happening, now with him being arrested, I really hope this gives her some peace because she needs that.”
He said he hopes justice is served.
“She was only four months — you don’t have that right to take a life,” he said.
He said Thomson, who was living with the baby’s mom was alone at the home the night Zaria was injured.
“I don’t know if he was having difficulties the last couple weeks — if I would have known I would have been there to help,” he said.
But his son seemed to be a good father who often to turned to his Facebook wall to express his love for his child.
“The way he talked, he did love her to death,” Eklund said.
On the accused’s Facebook page Saturday, the day Zaria died, he thanked his friends for their support, assuring them he would never harm his little girl.
“Thank you all for your support losing my daughter was so hard on me i am so lost right now she kept me so happy and now (she) isn’t here anymore love you all and once agian (sic) thank you :’( 3 ,="" :’(“="" about="" always="" and="" be="" dady="" he="" here="" i="" last="" love="" miss="" much="" said="" saturday.
“I love my daughter with all my heart I wouldn’t dare harm her id kill myself before that like honestly she meant the world to me she deserves everything i miss her so much!!!!” he posted two hours later.
Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Kathe Deheer could not say which parent took her to hospital nor could she reveal the baby’s cause of death.
Thomson appeared in court Friday morning and his case was put over to Dec. 7.
