Calgary father fit for trial in attemped murder of 11-month-old son
By Daryl Slade November 1, 2011
A father charged with attempted murder in the slashing of his 11-month-old son has been found fit to stand trial.
The 32-year-old man appeared before provincial court Judge Brian Stevenson on Tuesday after spending the past 60 days at the southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre.
His lawyer, Alain Hepner, told the judge he just received the report by Dr. David Tano on Monday night and it concluded his client was fit, meaning he understands the charges he is facing and can instruct counsel.
Stevenson then requested that the case be adjourned to Friday so he can discuss it with Crown counsel.
The accused man cannot be named because it would identify the child.
Police have previously said the agitated man was found in a home in the 1000-block of Cranston Drive S.E. when they arrived at the home about 4 a.m. on Aug. 13.
The boy had suffered slashes to the throat and abdomen in the pre-dawn incident and was rushed to hospital, but is expected to fully recover.
Police say a kitchen knife was used in the attack and that he 26-year-old mother lives in the home, but wasn’t inside the residence when the baby was attacked.
