Young father given 27 years in son's death
A man from the Normandy area has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his month-old-son whose cries disturbed him while he was playing video games.
Andrew Keith Johnston, who was 19 at that time, entered the plea Monday in Bedford County Circuit Court, admitting that he caused the death of his son William on Oct. 15 of last year.
He was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
By pleading guilty Johnston, who had been charged with first-degree murder, avoided sentences of either life in prison or life without parole or the death penalty.
An assistant Bedford County district attorney alleged in court that Johnston made a written statement that the infant was crying in his bassinet and that he became irritated because the baby was interring with his playing of video games.
Johnston wrote that he held the child in his hands and squeezed him harder than he intended and that he took both of his legs and shook him with enough force to hurt him.
The baby was transported to Harton Regional Medical Center where he was treated and later flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he died.
An autopsy revealed that William died of "non-accidental trauma" and that the cause of death was homicide.
While the baby was at Harton, the mother Amanda Voss told Tullahoma Police Officer Tiffany Host that she had gone to the store for approximately 10 minutes and left the child with his father.
