PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Superior Court judge on Friday sentenced Brian Verry, 34, of Narragansett, to 15 years in prison after a jury convicted him of child abuse involving his infant daughter.
The sentence was 20 years, but Justice Edwin J. Gale suspended five of those years.
Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin said in a news release that the crime took place in 2006.
A jury found Verry guilty on Jan. 14 of child abuse, felony assault causing serious bodily injury, and assault. A trial in April 2010 ended in a hung jury.
Gale also imposed a no contact order and mental health counseling.
"There is no excuse or justification for the abuse of a child. Our thoughts go out to the victim and the family, and hope they can move forward knowing the abuser is behind bars and cannot hurt another child," Kilmartin said.
The child, who was 55 days old, suffered a skull fracture when Verry struck her, Kilmartin reported. Evidence produced at trial also showed that the defendant squeezed and struck the child since birth until March 7, 2006, resulting in multiple rib fractures and other broken bones.
