ST. LOUIS • Steven Nashaun McCoy, 21, of the 3800 block of Gravois Avenue, was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault and abuse of a child for allegedly shaking and hitting his 3-month-old son.
The baby was in the hospital Tuesday in critical condition with brain swelling and brain bleeding. The abuse allegedly happened at McCoy's home on Monday.
Court documents say the baby seemed fine and was left in McCoy's care when the baby's mother left the home at about 10 a.m. The baby was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance at about 2 p.m., court documents say.
Medical personnel said the baby had to have sustained the injuries after 10 a.m., during the time he was exclusively in McCoy's care. McCoy was arrested at the hospital and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
