A 31-year-old Lakeville man remained jailed Sunday evening, accused of assaulting his teenage son, who needed about 20 stitches in and around his ear after the father allegedly hurled a drinking glass at him.
The 14-year-old may also have a perforated eardrum and faces possible hearing loss, according to charges against his father, George Armando Gonzalez.
The victim told police that he had been previously pushed around and hit by his father but had never been assaulted like this.
Gonzalez is charged with malicious punishment of a child and third-degree assault. A complaint filed last week in Dakota County District Court says the Jan. 31 incident happened this way:
The father fell asleep on the couch while the boy cooked dinner. When the boy tried to wake his dad, he was upset and belligerent toward the boy.
They sat at the table until the dad threw bread from his fish sandwich and also the son's cell phone down the stairs. The father ordered his son to pick up the items.
Once back on the main level, as his father continued to yell at him, the teen turned to look at his father and saw a glass cylinder being thrown at him.
"The victim moved his head to the right and was struck on the left ear. He said there was a large amount of gushing blood coming from his ear and blood was all over the floor. The bleeding continued for two to three hours after the incident," the complaint says.
It goes on to say that Gonzalez told his son not to say anything or the dad would go to prison.
The boy's mother took him to a hospital, where police were notified.
Gonzalez is being held in lieu of $45,000 bail.
