A Pooler man has been indicted on charges he abused his 7-week-old son, inflicting injuries described by police as life-threatening.
John McNeal, 25, faces counts of aggravated battery and cruelty to children, according to Pooler police Maj. Mark Revenew.
In June, the police were notified of the infant's condition by doctors at Memorial University Medical Center, Revenew said.
"It was determined the injuries were more than likely inflicted," Revenew said, explaining that police started interviewing family members. "We identified (McNeal) as the suspect, and he was cooperative. He was arrested, charged and ultimately indicted."
A Chatham County grand jury indicted McNeal, of Osprey Point Circle, on Wednesday, police said.
"The child has made some improvements toward recovery," Revenew said. "Everybody's cautiously optimistic."
