A Mount Washington man was charged with murder in the death Saturday of an eastern Jefferson County woman — the city’s first homicide of 2010.

Police responded to an apartment in the 13000 Block of Cain Lane, in eastern Jefferson County, about 3:15 a.m. Saturday to find a woman in her 20s dead from an assault and a man of the same age with serious injuries.

Police did not identify the victims. They said an infant was found unharmed in the apartment.

Police arrested Nicholas Salfi, 28 — the female victim’s ex-boyfriend and the baby’s father — on charges of murder, attempted murder and tampering with physical evidence, said Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

Salfi was taken to Metro Corrections, she said.

Police declined to say how the woman was killed. The Jefferson County Coroner’s office said an official cause of death will be released after an autopsy is conducted on Sunday.

“The baby has been placed in a safe location,” Smiley said, noting that the child had relatives in the area.

The male victim was in serious condition at University Hospital. Police said he knocked on nearby doors before someone answered and called police.

Last year Louisville police reported 73 murders to the FBI, which excludes six homicides that were ruled justified or occurred in other police departments’ jurisdictions.

But FBI estimates show that Metro Louisville saw a 12 percent decrease from the previous year in overall violent crime — which includes murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
