The father of a 2-year-old girl who was severely scalded in hot bathwater was given a 10-year sentence Tuesday for neglecting to get the girl immediate help.

Carl Holt III, 26, will serve 2 1/2 years with Community Corrections and have the other 7 1/2 years suspended from prison. Holt will serve five of those years on probation after completing Community Corrections programs, which could include work release, home detention, counseling and other options.

Holt pleaded guilty in January to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class B felony.

His daughter, Kellie Raeleigh Hunter, suffered second-degree burns that covered her feet and legs in November 2007 that required skin-graft surgery.

Prosecutors dropped a charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class B felony, against Holt in exchange for his plea to the neglect charge.

Bartholomew Circuit Court Judge Stephen Heimann made clear with Holt that the 10-year sentence was to the Indiana Department of Corrections but that he is allowing Holt to serve it through Community Corrections and on probation.
