WOODSTOCK - A 44-year-old Spring Grove area man accused of breaking his one-month-old son’s leg in August was appointed a public defender this morning.
Brian E. Felch, of 208 Dannell Place, remained in McHenry County jail this morning unable to post 10 percent of his $100,000 bail. He is charged with aggravated battery to a child.
Felch and the baby’s mother took the child to Centegra Hospital - McHenry early on Aug. 21, said Lt. Andy Zinke of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. The baby was transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and medical personnel ultimately determined that there was a high probability the injury was caused by abuse, Zinke said.
The investigation focused on events at Felch’s home the night before the baby was taken to the hospital.
“After interviewing the family and reviewing the case with DCFS and medical professionals, we believe the baby’s injuries were intentionally caused,” Zinke said.
Felch is next due in court Oct. 1 to set a date for a preliminary hearing. If convicted, he could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison.
