Alcoholic custodial dad with extensive DUI history avoids jail--because he's a custodial dad to 3-year-old daughter (Queensland, Australia)
Who says daddies are discriminated against? On the contrary, they are coddled again and again.
What a sweet deal for custodial dad MARK DANIEL TANTHEM. F*** up all you want, because you will never lose custody and never be held accountable. Ignore every court order that was ever issued and drive drunk and unlicensed as much as you like. No jail ever!
What happened to this little girl's mother? Total silence as usual.

Child is the only reason single parent is not behind bars
30th Apr 2013 6:00 AM
A THREE-year-old girl is the only reason a repeat offender isn't behind bars.
Mark Daniel Tathem, 27, yesterday pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified by a court order.
Tathem was intercepted by police at the Blacksoil Caltex on the Warrego Hwy, where he was driving an intoxicated friend home.
The court heard Tathem, a single father of a three-year-old daughter, has an extensive history of driving while unlicensed and disqualified.
Magistrate Michael Quinn said Tathem had a "terrible history of disregarding orders of the court".
"He's had so many chances, why should the court give him any more," he said.
"You seem to have breached every order given to you.
"The only thing saving you from actual jail time is the three-year-old."
Tathem was disqualified for two years and given a four-month suspended jail sentence.

Irate dad 'chokes and bites' his 10-year-old then hangs boy on fence to 'teach him a lesson'

An angry Houston father took the reprimanding and punishment of his ten-year-old son way too far, according to police.
Marty Andrews, 37, was charged with felony injury to a child after witnesses said they saw him first choke and bite the boy on the forehead, as reported by Khou.com.
In the incident, which happened on February 26, Andrews reportedly then bodyslammed his son onto the hood of a car. He believed the child had been fighting during a yard football game
According to court documents, the man then picked up his son by the shirt and threw him into a fence. He then apparently picked up the boy and hung him on the railings.
The ten-year-old agreed with the accusations against his father. The documents stated that the boy also said his dad had been squeezing his throat while questioning him.
Khou.com said that Mr Andrews did not agree with the severity of his punishment and that he was only trying to 'teach him a lesson.'
Andrews claimed that he was upset as he believed his son had been quarreling with the other children he was playing football with. He claimed his teeth hit the boy’s forehead by accident.
The father admitted that he had lifted the boy up by his jacket and put him on the hood of a car.
Andrews also said he did hold the boy up against the fence by his neck but claimed he didn't squeeze it very hard.

Dad charged with child abuse for suspending daughter over bridge railing (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
Is dad HANS JANSMA a single and/or custodial father? Can't help but wonder, since as far as I have seen, there is NO MENTION OF A MOTHER in any of the news accounts.
Seems like Mom would have played a role in this happy-little-family-at-home ruse for the media IF she was around.
Frankly, I'm wary of the "repeated" kissing and hugging between the little girl and her father. It's a little icky, and frequently seen with custodial dads with boundary issues. It's especially common for this to be played up for naive reporters who don't "get" this kind of stuff. It also tends to go with trauma bonding--which is what happens when you're just four years of age, and Daddy puts you on a bridge pillar over a raging river at flood stage.
So what happened to Mom?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A man caught on camera allowing his 4-year-old daughter to stand on the outside of the railing on a bridge just inches from a swollen Grand River has now been charged with child abuse.
Hans Jansma was charged with fourth-degree child abuse, a one-year misdemeanor, for what happened on the pedestrian Blue Bridge in downtown Grand Rapids. Jansma turned himself in on the charge and was released from jail.
Jansma put his daughter "at unreasonable risk of harm or physical injury by allowing said child to stand on a bridge pillar over a flooded river," according to court documents.
Jansma spoke to 24 Hour News 8 a day after the April 22 incident. He said his young girl was never in any danger.
"I'm not going to put my daughter in any harm," Jansma said at the time. "That's crazy."
The 24 Hour News 8 photojournalist who captured the incident saw Jansma and another adult standing on the Blue Bridge above the child. Jansma was holding the other end of the rope wrapped around the girl's waist. Jansma referred to that rope last week as a "safety rope." He described it as a 3/8-inch piece of rope that he says could easily hold his daughter's 35 pounds -- or even, he claimed, his own weight.
"It was a rope," he described Monday. "It wasn't twine. It wasn't fishing line. It was a rope."
When 24 Hour News 8 was at his home last week, the girl appeared to be happy and affectionate toward her father, kissing and hugging him repeatedly.
Jansma also never took his eyes off the girl as she played in front of his home. Jansma is scheduled to be in court to face the charge in early May.
Jansma previously pleaded guilty to three misdemeanors -- none of which were child abuse -- in 2001 and 2004.

Dad arrested for child neglect; wandering toddler united with Mom (Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin)
UNNAMED DAD.
Typically, this kind of case falls into two categories.
1) The babysitting or "stay-at-home" dad who can't/won't get a job--often because of past issues with the criminal justice system, drug/alcohol abuse, or general irresponsbility. Mom is forced to use him as a child care provider because she must work to support the family.
2) The single dad who manages to get custody/visitation rights--despite being a deadbeat, a convicted felon, and a child-neglecting drunk.
Since this happened on a Sunday afternoon, I'm betting on scenario #2. Especially since the mother was not charged. And had she been in the home, she would have been charged as well.

A toddler found wandering a neighborhood on Sturgeon Bay's east side has been reunited with her mother and the child's father has been arrested on child neglect charges.
Sturgeon Bay police say officers were dispatched to the area of Superior Street Sunday at 12:22 p.m. for a found child. The girl had been found wandering in the neighborhood and neighbors couldn't locate any parents.
Eventually police were alerted to a residence in the neighborhood where a man was lying unresponsive on the porch. Police say the 23-year-old Sturgeon Bay man was intoxicated, had walked to the location and had fallen asleep with his child nearby. Officers arrested him on charges of child neglect and felony bail jumping for violating absolute sobriety requirements of his bond.
Police are thanking neighbors for their assistance in the incident.

Registered sex offender dad seeking custody rights, visitation with 6-year-old daughter (Wayne County, Michigan)
Dad is identified as DONALD CARNS.
Sickening that a convicted sex offender doesn't automaticallly lose his parental rights, but I guess we have the fathers' rights movement to thank for that. They're so interested in the welfare of the children, doncha know...
What they are interested in is maintaining the "rights" of predators to have ready access to victims.

WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. - A battle brewing Monday in a Wayne County Court, over child visitation, could have an impact across the state.
The case involves a registered sex offender who wants visitation rights with his 6-year-old daughter.
The mother is fighting visitation, saying current Michigan law gives the sex offender rights, while denying rights to her daughter.
Amy Carns wants to stop her ex-husband Donald from getting custody and visitation of their daughter.
He is the biological father who also pled no-contest to soliciting sex from underage girls over the internet.
"If you're a convicted sex offender you can't even go into a school, you can't go into sporting events, you cannot go anywhere near where other people's children are present." said Carns.
But, Michigan law is not as clear when the sex offender is a parent.
Carns argues that as a school principal she can protect other children from contact with sex offenders, but she legally can't shield her own daughter.
"My daughter could be forced to sit in a room with a man that committed his crimes and tried to have sex with minor children for almost three years," she said. Carns wants to change the law.
The Children's Protection Act, now in the Michigan Senate, would eliminate some of the special consideration a biological parent gets when that parent is also a sex offender.
"I did not become a mother to involve my daughter in one-on-one contact repeatedly with someone who solicited children for sex, not at all. I protect children, not just mine but children every day in my school building form sex offenders entering, steeping foot in my school so they are that safe at all times," said Carns.
Father Donald Carns was asked if he wanted to tell his side of the story, but he declined to speak with Local 4.
The visitation issue in this case has not been decided. The judge wanted to talk with the child before making a ruling.
The Children's Protection Act is currently in the Senate pending a vote, if passed it would move to the House.

Custodial dad accused of beating son with hangers, cords (Naples, Florida)
Appears dad NAPOLEON FULLER began abusing his son as soon as he got custody. He obviously wasn't married to the mother. Can't help but wonder if she left him for domestic violence....

Naples man accused of beating son with hangers and cords

NAPLES, FL - After a monthlong investigation, a Naples man was arrested after being accused of repeatedly beating his teenage son with hangers and cords.
We went to the neighborhood where deputies say the abuse happened.
Deputies say Napolean Fuller gained custody of his son after the boy's mother died.
Earlier this month, the victim told the Children's Advocacy Center about years of abuse.
It started an investigation, which led to his father's arrest.
The apartment complex on Sunshine Blvd. is a place of darkness for the young boy.
"There's a lot of families just nothing really goes on around this neighborhood," said Carl Montinar, a neighbor.
It's where Collier County Sheriff's deputies say the boy suffered years of child abuse.
The boy said his father, Napolean Fuller, punched, kicked and hit him.
These allegations are shocking to some of his neighbors.
"I've never seen Napoleon hit his son or anything. Napoleon has just been like a second father to me cause every time we're playing football he'll give me tips and stuff," said Calvin Dorceat.
A monthlong investigation began after the child described repeated beatings to staff at the Children's Advocacy Center.
According to the police report, he moved in with his father at this apartment complex in March of 2011. When his grades started to drop, that's when he became abusive.
The report says, "his dad began hitting him with his hand and hangers during the 5th grade."
It also says, "Napoleon began striking [victim] on his legs, arms, and back with sticks. [victim] stated that the sticks would break so his father began using cords to hit him with."
The investigation included a medical examination, where deputies say the evidence of abuse was clear.
The report says, "I observed many permanent scars on [victim's] body that resemble perfectly shaped loop marks and marks that were long and thick like a stick."
"When I heard what happened, the situation it was just hard for me to believe," said Calvin Dorceat, a neighbor.
On Friday, the investigation closed with fuller leaving this neighborhood in handcuffs.
According to the report, fuller did admit to hitting his son with a stick, but never leaving a mark.
He told police the scars on his son's body were from someone else.

Saudi man discovered to be ‘mentally ill’

A Saudi father tied up his one-year-old daughter with chains and took her to the Red Crescent hospital in the Gulf Kingdom for treatment, saying she has psychological problems. But the shocked staff discovered that the one who is ill is the father.
Medical staff were caught off guard when the Saudi man walked into their centre in the central town of Makkah at dawn on Saturday and handed them the chained baby.
When they asked him why he had tied her up, he told them that he believes she is suffering from psychological problems.
“Doctors there decided to hand the girl to the obstetrics hospital after they discovered that the father is mentally ill,” Sabq Arabic language newspaper said, adding that police were informed about the incident.

“Doctors there decided to hand the girl to the obstetrics hospital after they discovered that the father is mentally ill,” Sabq Arabic language newspaper said, adding that police were informed about the incident.

Depressed man kills daughter, self
By Express News Service - BANGALORE 28th April 2013 11:01 AM
It was an opportunity for 7-year-old Lakshya to spend some time with her father Arvind a day before he was to return to Singapore. The father-daughter duo were holidaying at the Bannerghatta National Park on Friday. The happy girl drew sketches of her father Arvind holding her hand. Little did she know that later that night her father would poison her before ending his own life.
Arvind (37), a senior sales executive working in Singapore, had come to meet his daughter 10 days back. His daughter Lakshya was living with her grandmother in JP Nagar 7th Phase. Arvind had lost his wife Sindhu to a kidney failure two years back and was depressed, police said.
After arriving in Bangalore, Arvind took his mother, younger brother and daughter on a vacation to Andaman Islands and returned on Wednesday.
After a day’s break, on Friday, Arvind took his daughter to the Jungle Lodges in Bannerghatta. According to the police, he checked in at 11 am and went on the safari with Lakshya, and returned around 6 pm. He called his mother at 7.30 pm and told her that they would get home late. He asked his mother not to call him again since his phone’s battery would die soon.
When he did not return home that night, his family grew suspicious. They informed the local police station. Their bodies were discovered in the morning by the resort staff. After repeated knocking on the door yielded no response, the staff called the Bannerghatta Police, who broke open the window to find Arvind hanging from the ceiling. Police found a suicide note which said, “I am sorry....Please burn all gifts my wife gave me when we were in love along with my body.”
Arvind and Sindhu’s was an inter-caste marriage. Lakshya had completed grade II. Sources close to the family said on Thursday, Arvind had called Lakshya for a movie but she had declined.

The father of two year old girl has absconded after his attempts to cure her with boiling water left her with severe burns on her buttocks and genital parts.
The father, who is unidentified, is said to have held the little girl over boiling water to cure her of candidyasis.
But she fell into the hot water and sustained severe injuries. The young girl is currently at the 37 Military Hospital where she is receiving treatment. Doctors attending to the girl say she is responding to treatment.
Women’s rights group, WILDAF, which is assisting the mother of the girl to seek treatment, has condemned the father’s action. Programme Coordinator Bernice Sam says his act constitutes abuse and negligence, for which he must be arrested.
She would however not ask for his imprisonment if found guilty. She suggested counseling for the man who is said to have fathered seven children with his wife.

Dad gets 10 years for abusing infant daughter during weekend visitation (Wellford, South Carolina)
No explanation here as to whether this weekend visitation plan was court-ordered. But the research is quite clear. Babies do not benefit in any way, shape, or form by being subjected to visitation plans, especially overnights and weekends. Babies like consistent care giving, which is one reason they are more likely to become "fussy" when traded around like a hot potato. Too many men just cannot deal with a crying infant...that's why fathers and boyfriends dominate as perpetrators of abusive head trauma.
The idea that a never married father should have weekend visitation with a baby is a fathers rights notion that has long outlived any usefulness. It belongs in the dust pan of Bad Ideas.

Father pleads guilty to shaking baby; to serve 10 years
Truck driver under pressure snapped

A Wellford man admitted to shaking his infant daughter after he “snapped,” causing a life-threatening brain injury from which the child is still recovering.
James N. Davis Jr., 28, of 26 Springbrook Court, pleaded guilty Friday to felony child abuse inflicting great bodily injury.
Circuit Judge Derham Cole imposed the maximum 20-year sentence, suspended upon the service of 10 years and 5 years’ probation.
Davis said in court that he and the infant’s mother, Amy Owensby, had separated and he kept their child, Cheyenne, on the weekends.
Davis said on Aug. 17, Owensby told him that Cheyenne had been “fussy” that week. Davis said after dinner, he took Cheyenne to his home, laid her down and shut a door after she began crying.
He said she began screaming about half an hour later. He said he tried comforting her, but she continued to cry. He said that, along with other pressures he faced, pushed him over the edge.
“All that came crashing down. … I snapped. There’s no reason for it. I don’t know why I did it,” Davis said.
Seventh Circuit Assistant Solicitor Jennifer Jordan said in court that Davis called 911 dispatchers shortly before 7 p.m. and reported Cheyenne wasn’t breathing.
Jordan said the baby could be heard gasping for breath in the 911 call. Jordan said Davis gave two statements to officers. Davis initially claimed he did not know what happened to his daughter.
In a second statement provided on Aug. 18, she said Davis stated that he tried bouncing, swaying and rubbing the infant’s head, but could not calm her down. Davis stated that he yelled at Cheyenne, asking why she had to be that way, Jordan said, before shaking her with such force that her jaw chattered three times and she began breathing heavily.
Jordan said Cheyenne was a perfectly healthy child broken in a moment of anger.
Cheyenne was unresponsive when an officer arrived at Davis’ home, according to a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
She was taken by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment and spent a little more than two hours in surgery for brain injuries she sustained.
Cheyenne remained in the hospital for a month. One month after she was released, she was readmitted for another operation.
Jordan said Cheyenne has made “significant improvements” and is now eating. A feeding tube she has soon might be removed, Jordan added.
Yet, she still suffers. One side of her body has been affected. Jordan said that due to her young age, 16 months, the permanent physical, emotional and mental impacts are unknown and there’s no definite prognosis. Cheyenne continues to receive therapy and visit doctors.
Davis’ attorney, Timothy Ray, said Davis was a truck driver when the incident occurred and had worked 120 hours in the two weeks leading up to the incident.
“He told me he wanted to be Superman,” Ray said of Davis’ long work hours and determination to care for his daughter without others’ help.
Ray said Davis has suffered with guilt and is remorseful for a “split-second decision” that resulted in horrible consequences.
“What has hurt him the most is the struggles that his daughter has gone through,” Ray said.
Davis had no criminal record prior to abusing his daughter.
“This was something that was completely out of character,” Ray said.
Ray said that although Davis didn’t immediately confess, he did not hide his actions and immediately called 911.
No victims addressed the court. Owensby was in the courtroom with several supporters. Davis’ family also was there.
Davis’ voice cracked at times as he addressed Cole before sentencing.
Davis said he prays every night that God will heal and protect his daughter and that she won’t suffer for what he’s done.
“I love her so much,” Davis said.
He said he cried for hours after receiving a photograph of his daughter.
He also told Cole that upon learning he could possibly have supervised visitation if he completes parenting classes, anger management and other requirements, has a “glimmer of hope” that his daughter will forgive him and some day might be a “daddy’s girl.”
After the hearing, Jordan said, “I just hope that Cheyenne continues to improve.”
Those who love the toddler are certain she will.
“She’s a very determined baby who’s not going to give up fighting. She’ll fight to the end,” said Kandy Cannon, a family friend and Cheyenne’s “adopted aunt.”
Cannon said Cole’s ruling was fair, and justice was served.
Owensby would not comment.

Father charged with child abuse
From staff reports
School officials noted a young boy’s suspicious injuries and reported the findings, leading to the boy’s father being arrested, police said.
After responding to the call about possible child abuse, Bulloch County sheriff’s investigators arrested the father Friday on charges he intentionally harmed his son, Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said.
Sheriff’s investigators accompanied caseworkers from the Bulloch County Department of Family and Children Services in a visit Friday to Stilson Elementary School, where they met with school officials and a 6-year-old boy who “displayed extensive bruising and marks in a pattern consistent with abuse,” Anderson said.
Caseworkers took the child into protective custody while deputies located the father, Rodney Christopher Fudge, 25, of Woodyard Lane, Brooklet, he said.
Fudge was charged with first-degree cruelty to children and domestic violence battery.
He was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond because of the nature of the charges, Anderson said.

Teen dad who beat son 'ashamed,' going to prison
Apr. 26, 2013 2:43 PM | Written by Sophia Voravong
A Lafayette teenager was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison for hitting his 2-week-old son, causing skull fractures and brain bleeding that hospitalized the boy in intensive care last fall.
The boy, now 7 months old, recovered and is developing well.
His father, 19-year-old Brendan T. Bell, pleaded guilty last month in Tippecanoe Superior Court 1 to battery on a child, a Class B felony. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery against a relative in an unrelated case that occurred this past January.
Bell’s prison time will be followed by two years on community corrections and three years on supervised probation. He could be ordered at a later date to pay restitution for the boy’s medical costs.
During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Bell apologized for losing his temper and said he wants to help raise and “throw a ball around” with the boy — something he never got to experience with his own father.
“Clearly, no doubt about it, I was wrong,” Bell said. “My son didn’t deserve any of this. I love my son. I want to change.
“I would do anything to be with him right now, to hold him in my arms. ... When I see the pictures of him, I’m ashamed of myself.”
The charges stem from Bell’s arrest on Oct. 7, after his mother called police to report her grandson’s injuries.
The injuries were inflicted a day prior, on Oct. 6, after Bell picked his son up from the boy’s mother in West Lafayette. Bell and the mother were not in a relationship.
According to court documents, shortly after Bell put his son in a car seat and drove away, the boy became fussy and would not stop crying. Attempts to calm him down with a pacifier did not help.
Bell struck the right side of his son’s face three to six times.
He admitted to noticing that the boy’s injuries worsened through the night — bruises developed down his face, and the boy was not eating — but Bell did not seek help because he was “selfish,” having recently been and “did not want to lose” his job, the affidavit states.
Doctors at Riley Hospital for Children found skull fractures, subdural hematomas and scalp hematomas. He was released from Riley on Oct. 11.
On Friday, deputy prosecutor Emily Orsinger argued for a 12-year prison sentence and expressed concerns that Bell might harm his son again.
A psychologist who examined Bell diagnosed him with intermittent explosive disorder. The mental illness is marked by episodes of unwarranted anger, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Judge Randy Williams also said that diagnosis was a concern.
“I don’t see how anyone can do this to a child. To an infant, a baby,” he said. “I don’t understand. “There’s no excuse for what happened, and you’ve taken ownership of that.”
The results don't surprise me in the least either.

Dad rams mom's car, assaults her, kidnaps 9-month-old daughter (Dayton, Ohio)
No matter what the fathers rights people say, it's always about control for these abuser dads. Do you think this father was just wanting more "quality time" with his infant daughter when he rammed the car she was in, and risked injuring her? Was it a sign of love when he bashed the mother in the face and took the baby? Was it a sign of parental responsibility and concern when he smashed the rear window?
They'll tell you it was. I say bullsh**.

Police: Father rammed car; snatched baby
By Breaking News Staff
DAYTON — A Dayton father is in the Montgomery County Jail accused of ramming his ex-girlfriend’s car with their baby inside, assaulting her and taking the child.
One other vehicle was struck and damaged during the domestic incident.
The baby was eventually returned to a family member uninjured.
According to a Dayton Police incident report, Charles Cunningham followed his ex in a van from his sister’s house at about 5 p.m. Wednesday. She reported that he called her cellphone and threatened to ram the car if she didn’t stop.
Their 9-month-old daughter was in the back seat of the mother’s car.
On Catalpa Drive near West Fairview Avenue, Cunningham alleged pushed her car with his, causing her to drive into oncoming traffic and then strike another car.
The subjects in the other car corroborated the story, saying they saw a van pushing a Dodge Ram before they were hit, according to the report.
When the victim stopped her car, Cunningham allegedly got out and struck her in the face several times before taking the baby from her child seat.
He allegedly put the baby in his van and then came back with a baseball bat to smash the victim’s rear window, according to the report.
Police and family members talked to Cunningham on the phone and convinced him to return the child to his mother’s house, where he was later arrested.
Cunningham, 38, could be charged with four counts of felonious assault, one count of interfering with custody, and one count of felony domestic violence.

Dad gets probation for abusing newborn daughter (Madison, Nebraska)
Criminal coddling is usually labelled (by conservatives) as a "liberal" thing. But in reality, all the courts make continual excuses and accommodations for criminal daddies who abuse children, even newborns. The poor widdle dear was really STRESSED from all that crying. Boo hoo. Guess that makes it okay for this piece of sh** to shake or bash her?
Probation and a couple of useless classes. Wow. That'll show him.
Notice that there is NO mention of a mother in this home. Makes me wonder if this is a single father who does not live with the mother, but has some sort of visitation.
Dad is identified as JUSTIN GORE.

Father gets probation for shaking newborn daughter

MADISON — A new father who shook his 2-week-old girl out of frustration because she wouldn’t stop crying has already spent more than six months in jail.
He won’t face additional jail time on his felony child abuse charge but must complete 18 months of probation under his sentence given by Judge Mark Johnson in Madison County district court here Thursday morning.
Justin Gore, 22, admitted to shaking his daughter after he had been up for long hours and she wouldn’t stop crying, according to a police report.
The girl had been taken to the hospital for vomiting and diarrhea last September. Two subsequent doctor’s exams revealed bruising on her body. A CAT scan revealed a subdural bleed on the right side of her head which would be consistent with being shaken or struck.
She was only 19 days old.
Madison County deputy attorney Joe Hurd classified the abuse as especially egregious because of her age — with no ability to speak out against the abuse or defend herself.
Gore’s lawyer, Kyle Melia of the Madison County public defender’s office, said Gore was overwhelmed as a new father.
“He didn’t know how to properly respond to a child he needed to nurture,” he said.
There appears to be no lasting injuries to the girl, he said.
Gore said he hopes one day his family will forgive his actions.
“I’m ashamed of myself for it. I wish I could go back and change it,” he said.
Johnson noted Gore’s lack of criminal history in making his ruling but also stressed that the crime was violent.
“You were very lucky nothing more serious happened,” he told Gore. As part of Gore’s probation, he is required to take anger management and parenting classes.

Dad, gal pal arraigned on child neglect, mistreatment charges (Portland, Oregon)
This article is silent on the major issue here. Where is this boy's mother? Is BRIAN L. PARMENTIER a custodial father? Or did all this happen during the meth-head daddy's visitation? No answer.
How did this boy end up with these losers? What officials, if any, were involved in making that decision? Will they be held accountable for their decisions? No answer.

Portland father, girlfriend accused of child neglect, mistreatment
By Maxine Bernstein, The Oregonian

A Portland father and his girlfriend face child neglect and criminal mistreatment allegations, accused of leaving the dad's 10-year-old son home alone "in deplorable conditions" in a Southeast Portland apartment for a night.
Brian L. Parmentier , 40 and Sarah Call, 32, were arraigned in Multnomah County Circuit Court Thursday.
They each face allegations of first-degree child neglect, two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and second-degree animal neglect.
According to Portland police, Officer Robert Slyter responded Wednesday to a report of a child left unattended at an apartment in the 12500 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard.
The 10-year-old boy invited the officer in when Slyter showed up at the apartment. "Officer Slyter immediately could see that the home was in deplorable conditions with garbage, food and dog feces all over the floor,'' deputy district attorney Susan Howard wrote in a probable cause affidavit filed in court Thursday.
There was no running water, flies everywhere and no phone available in the residence, the affidavit said.
Officer Judy McFarlane, who was also on scene, wrote in her police report that "these were the worst conditions she has seen'' in her 40 years as an officer, Howard wrote in the affidavit.
McFarlane called animal control officers since there were three dogs, a cat and three kittens without food or water inside the apartment.
The 10-year-old boy also hadn't eaten that day, police said. Parmentier told police he thought his son was old enough to stay home by himself.
Call explained why they weren't home: They'd been arrested and accused of possessing methamphetamine and spent the night in jail.
How did this boy end up with these losers? What officials, if any, were involved in making that decision? Will they be held accountable for their decisions? No answer.

Dad gets 88 years to life for molesting his kids (Denver, Colorado)
Dad DAVID TARVER is a puke.

David Tarver gets 88 years to life for molesting his own children -- and more
By Michael Roberts
Wed., Mar. 7 2012 at 5:44 AM
David Tarver has admittedly been molesting children -- most prominently his own -- since the late 1980s, at least.
Fortunately, that will stop, thanks to a just-imposed sentence of 88 years to life in prison. But no doubt the horrible offenses detailed in the arrest affidavit will linger for a lifetime.
The end of Tarver's terrifying reign can be traced to February 2010, when his 25-year-old daughter went to authorities in Denver about Tarver, known as Russ -- a shortened version of his middle name. She told an officer that he had been arrested for sexually assaulting one of his grandchildren in Wyoming. But she said this was hardly an isolated incident, and she wanted the sort of abuse that she and her siblings suffered at his hands to end once and for all.
Her first memory of being molested by her father took place when she was four-years old; the family was living in Texas at the time. As she recalled, he grabbed the back of her head and forced her to perform oral sex on him.
More incidents like this occurred over the years that followed, she said, including a rape that took place when she was twelve -- he subsequently begged her not to tell her mother what happened by offering her candy -- and an interrupted sleepover at age sixteen, after she had run away. After Tarver made rude comments about her and a friend she'd brought along with her, she went to her bedroom to lay down. A short time later, Tarver entered and began fondling her breasts. She responded by saying "I hate you" and punching him. The exchange was so loud that her mother heard, but according to the daughter, her mom assumed they were simply arguing.
From there, officers went to Tarver's youngest child, a boy. His molestations began early, too, with one incident of forced oral sex ending when the boy, then a third-grader, said he could no longer breathe. After the child told his father he didn't want to participate in such activities again, Tarver responded by smacking him.
Tarver's third child was victimized as well. He detailed thirteen incidents of sexual abuse, most of them taking place in Denver.
What did Tarver have to say about these reports? During an interview with cops, he didn't dispute the allegations. In fact, he said that he generally would abuse his kids on a weekly basis. And while he couldn't remember many of the details, he did confirm that in one instance, a daughter choked during oral sex, for which he said he was sorry afterward.
He clearly owes a helluva lot more apologies than that. Tarver will begin serving time for his crimes in Wyoming, where he was also convicted of abusing that grandchild. His sentence is officially considered indeterminate, meaning he shouldn't get a chance to molest another youngster again.

Little girl tortured by custodial dad now in custody of her mother; girl's sister murdered by dad (Dubai, United Arab Emirates)

Wadeema's tortured sister physically and emotionally scarred by killer father

DUBAI // The little Emirati girl whose sister was tortured to death by their father has been sent to start her long recovery with her mother.
Mira was tortured and starved along with her sister Wadeema, 8.
She is physically scarred and emotionally traumatised, said Afra Al Basti, director general of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, where Mira was sent after her father was arrested.
Since then, custody of Mira has been awarded to her mother, who their father divorced in 2006.
“We had to do therapy with the mother first [about] how to deal with this girl,” Ms Al Basti said.
Mira was 7 when her sister’s case came to light last summer.
Prosecutors said the girls’ father and his girlfriend burnt them with cigarettes, poured boiling water on them and whipped them with electrical cords in their Dubai International City flat.
Their father was drunk and high on tramadol when he beat Wadeema with a bar and locked her in a bathroom, where he found her dead the next day, the court heard.
The UAE’s new child-protection legislation, a draft being discussed by the FNC, was named Wadeema’s Law in her memory.
In February, the father was sentenced to death and his girlfriend to life in jail. He is appealing against the sentence.
Mira’s recovery is just beginning. The abuse she saw and experienced could have emotional, behavioural, social and physical consequences, said Naeema Jiwani, a child development psychologist in Dubai.
“Family violence creates a home environment where children live in constant fear because everything is so variable,” Ms Jiwani said.
“Even though she is removed from this environment, because she has witnessed this at an age where fantasy bleeds into reality she is not really sure what her world is made of.”
The physical scars present more challenges. Mira’s skin is marked with white circles from the burns.
“This she can’t forget,” Ms Al Basti said. “We are trying to find out if we can do some cosmetic surgery for her.”
Foundation staff are working closely with Mira and her mother, visiting the girl at home and school, Ms Al Basti said. “We follow every single day the mother and the girl.”
The foundation also conducts unannounced visits to gather evidence for future custody hearings.
“After six months we have to give feedback [to the court] and then again in six months, continuously,” Ms Al Basti said.
As Mira grows up she may grapple with feelings of anger, helplessness, depression or even embarrassment, Ms Jiwani said.
“This poor child has to go back into society, back into her school network, back into even just the neighbourhood,” she said. “How many people know of what happened to her?”
Mira may also have trouble trusting or bonding with her mother.
“Fear of abandonment is really, really big in children who witness family violence,” Ms Jiwani said.
In court, defence lawyer Hamdi Al Sheewi argued Mira’s mother should also face charges, claiming she had given up on her daughters. The court rejected that argument.
Mira’s future will depend on how she and her mother cope, Ms Jiwani said. “This is where her mother comes in as her figure for everything, for changing this entire cycle.
“Depending on how she manages and brings up this child it could go very positively.”
Eventually, Mira will need to find a way to make sense of the trauma she experienced.
“Why was this done to her? That’s going to be one of the biggest questions,” Ms Jiwani said. “Is this how normal children are treated?
“The mum is going to have to put a complete opposite model of love and trust and respect.”
Therapy will also play a crucial role, Ms Jiwani said. “She needs to be able to relive some of that trauma in a contained capacity.”
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, has offered to pay Mira’s expenses.

The Las Cruces man who left his infant daughter in a laundry basket, went out to buy beer, then returned to find the child unresponsive, was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to 18 years in prison, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
Robert Flores, 28, was convicted in February of negligent child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence at a trial held in Albuquerque because of concerns over local media coverage of the case.
State District Judge Fernando Macias told Flores he didn’t consider him a “monster,” but said “there has to be accountability,” the Sun-News said.
Flores’ attorney Mark Pickett had asked for a 12-year sentence, citing mitigating factors, such as his genuine remorse and love for his daughter, the paper reported. Pickett also asked that Flores be released on bond pending his appeal.
But Macias said there were no mitigating factors and that Flores might consider a bond hearing once he saw the basis for an appeal, according to the Sun-News report.
Meanwhile, Flores — who had been free on bond for most of the time since being indicted more than five years ago — was led in handcuffs from the courtroom Tuesday, the Sun-News said.
Prosecutor Jacinto Palomino said a determination on a bond hearing for Flores could come within 40 days, the paper reported.

An 18-year-old father has been accused of injuring his then-5-week-old baby and not providing her immediate medical attention.
A Juneau grand jury indicted Hoonah resident Michael T. Williams on Friday. He is facing one felony count of third-degree assault and one misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault.
Prosecutors say Williams ultimately admitted to squeezing the infant and causing injuries to her face. Assistant District Attorney Angie Kemp described the injuries in court as “significant,” adding the baby had bruising on her face and eye. The baby, who was born on Dec. 13, 2012, received medical attention several days after the Jan. 17 incident, she alleged.
Williams, on the other hand, said the injuries were a result of an accident — he said he almost dropped the baby, but grabbed her before she fell. He accidently squeezed her too hard when he was catching her, he told a magistrate in court after being arrested in Hoonah on Saturday, according to court documents.
The mother of the child also could not be reached for comment by press time.
The allegation of intentionally or knowingly injuring the child is not encompassed in either of the two charges Williams is facing. Rather, both charges allege that Williams “did recklessly cause physical injury” to the child. The felony assault charge contains the additional element that says the injury “would cause a reasonable caregiver to seek medical attention from a health care professional in the form of diagnoses or treatment.”
Third-degree assault is a class ‘C’ felony that can carry up to five years in prison. Fourth-degree assault is a class ‘A’ misdemeanor that can carry up to a year in prison.
Williams pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday in Juneau Superior Court before Judge Louis Menendez. The judge scheduled a jury trial to take place this summer in July.
Williams’ attorney Assistant Public Defender Timothy Ayer declined to comment on the case, but Williams’ father said in a phone interview that his son is innocent. Mike Williams, 39, said that the baby’s bruising was consistent with his son’s story, but the family of his son’s girlfriend “blew it out of proportion” and wanted to press charges since they don’t like his son.
“It ain’t fair at all, not at all,” the elder Williams said. “They’re taking stuff out on him.”
The father added that his son was being “railroaded” by the police chief in Hoonah, saying the chief promised his son that charges would be dropped if he admitted it was an accident.
Hoonah Police Chief Kelly Swihart could not be reached for comment late Tuesday afternoon.
Williams is currently being held in custody in lieu of $5,000 cash performance bond. Ayer told the judge he will likely request a bail hearing in the next few days

Dad admits abusing 3-month-old son; baby has severe permanent brain damage (United Kingdom)

Chester father admits inflicting GBH against his baby son
Apr 25 2013
Chester Chronicle
A FATHER pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm against his three-month-old son in a ‘baby shaking’ case at Chester Crown Court.
Richard Lovell, 25, a chef of Treborth Road, Blacon, whose chest bears a tattoo featuring his son’s name and date of birth, was originally prosecuted last year but the case was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.
However, the CPS warned it was likely to re-instigate proceedings.
Judge David Hale, sitting at Chester Crown Court on Monday, heard the defence argue there was ‘no intention to cause really serious harm’.
Lovell had denied grievous bodily harm with intent against his young son R-Jay Lovell, now aged 17 months, but admitted inflicting GBH.
However, Judge Hale commented: “But the shaking that he did do has had a terrible effect.”
The incident happened at an address in Chapel Lane, Chester, on February 6, 2012.
It is understood the brain injuries will result in severe permanent brain damage and visual impairment.
Lovell, a former amateur boxer, who has two other children from another relationship, will be sentenced on May 24 after the Probation Service has compiled a report.
The judge told Lovell: “The fact I’m adjourning the case for a report and renewing your bail should give you no indication as to the outcome. For the moment, you are free to go.”
Previous hearings have been told the infant was taken to hospital by Mr Lovell following a 999 call in which it was said the child was not breathing.
Medics found the baby, who was born at the Countess of Chester Hospital on November 13, 2011, had bleeds to his brain and hundreds of haemorrhages in both eyes.
The infant, who was also found to have a fractured left forearm, was transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool but is now believed to be at home with his mother.

The father of Ame Deal, a 10-year-old Phoenix girl who died in July 2011 after she was locked in a footlocker, has pleaded guilty to an attempted child abuse charge and possession of marijuana, according to court officials.
David Deal, 53, was taken into custody on July 8, almost a year after Ame’s death. He was one of several suspects taken into custody after Ame’s body was found in a footlocker that measured about 32 inches long, 14 inches wide and 12 inches deep, police said.
Officials also had accused Deal of locking his daughter in the trunk as punishment on several occasions between December 2010 and July 2011. After his arrest, Deal denied that Ame was his daughter and that he abused her, officials told The Republic in 2012.
Ame’s aunt, Cynthia Stoltzmann, 45, also pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse and one count of attempted child abuse, according to Maricopa County prosecutors. The sentencing for both Stoltzmann and Deal is scheduled for June 6. Deal faces up to 16 years in prison.
Ame’s cousins, 24-year-old John Allen and 24-year-old Sammantha Allen, have been charged with first-degree murder in connection to Ame’s death, according to court records. Authorities allege that her cousins stuffed her in the footlocker at her home, in the 3700 block of West Romley Road, as punishment for taking a popsicle from the freezer.
The state is seeking the death penalty against John and Sammantha Allen, authorities told The Republic in 2012. The death-penalty case won't come to trial until December, court records show.

Dad stabs to death three children after Mom ends relationship with him (United Kingdom)
CERI FULLER is your typical revenge-and-control killer dad. All the attempts to blame Mom are silly, but the media still does it. These morons are threatened by virtually everyone and everything. You can't make them happy.

Father killed three children after his wife ended relationship over 'crush' inquest hears
A father killed himself and his three children after his relationship with his wife broke down after she developed a crush on her lecturer, an inquest heard.
By Claire Carter 6:34PM BST 24 Apr 2013
Ceri Fuller, 35, is believed to have stabbed his 12-year-old son Samuel and daughters Rebecca, eight and Charlotte, seven, with a hunting knife, before killing himself.
All four bodies were found at the bottom of a disused quarry in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on July 16 last year. The children had been slashed in the neck, and Samuel and Rebecca are believed to have tried to defend themselves.
An inquest into their deaths heard Mrs Fuller told her sister Joanna Ballard that her and her husband had agreed to split up before he disappeared with their three children from their home in Milkwall, Gloucestershire, and that he had “understood” the split.
The 34-year-old also admitted to having a ‘schoolgirl’ crush on her Open University lecturer Mark Lindley-Highfield, and had posted a message on Facebook days before the bodies were found referring to a ‘bonkers midlife crisis.’
The inquest heard after Mrs Fuller was taken into hospital before the bodies were found she told her sister: “I think that Ceri killed Rebecca.”
Mrs Ballard said her sister had admitted a small crush on Mr Lindley-Highfield, but said this was just a "schoolgirl" crush and she had no plans to take it further.
The children and their father were reported missing on July 12 last year after he had failed to turn up for work at a paper mill and the children had not been seen at school. Their bodies were found four days later at Poles Coppice in Pontesbury Hill, near Shrewsbury.
The inquest heard Mrs Ballard had been called to her sister’s home at about 6.30pm on July 12 and had been told she had tried to kill herself.
She said when she arrived no one knew where Mr Fuller and the three children were. She said: "I looked through Ruth's phone and saw only loving texts between Ruth and Ceri even into Wednesday morning.
"I saw a text from her to Mark, her university lecturer, asking him out for a drink and another saying it was meant for Ceri.
"Ruth had told me she had a crush on Mark before. But she saw it as a schoolgirl crush and wasn't taking it further. "Before we went to hospital I asked her where Ceri and the children where and where but she just looked at me blankly and said 'mmm-hmmm'.”
Mrs Fuller was taken to hospital in Gloucester at about 10.30pm where she told her sister that she and her husband were splitting up and that he “understood”.
But in the early hours of July 13 Mrs Ballard said her sister looked into her eyes and told her “I think that Ceri killed Rebecca.”
Mrs Ballard told the court that there was nothing to suggest her sister had started a relationship with her humanities lecturer. She described the pair as a loving couple but said Mr Fuller could be possessive.
Deputy coroner for Mid-Shropshire Andrew Barkley asked Mrs Ballard if Mr Fuller had been "unnaturally possessive" towards his wife.
She said: "In my opinion yes, it was more possessive than I would be comfortable with in a relationship.
"It seemed to me that he seemed uncomfortable with Ruth wanting anything that wasn't being a mum."
The inquest heard Mrs Fuller and Mr Lindley-Highfield exchanged a string of text messages between July 11 and 12 last year. In one of the messages Mrs Fuller referred to a mid-life crisis and Mr Lindley-Highfield responded reminding her of the boundaries between a tutor and student.
Mrs Fuller had started a humanities course in January last year, which included tutoring sessions with Mr Lindley-Highfield held at Cheltenham College.

You have blighted your children's lives, judge tells rapist father

A father who repeatedly raped one son and sexually abused another has been jailed for 12 years.
The 57-year-old, from Loughborough, began molesting the boys after splitting up with their mother in the mid 1990s.
The abuse happened when the boys were staying at his home, often during weekend visits.
Jacqueline Matthew-Stroud, prosecuting, told Leicester Crown Court the eldest child was subjected to sexual assaults from the age of 12 until he was 17.
The youngest was abused when he was between six and seven.
Their father, who cannot be named to protect the victims' identities, pleaded guilty to four specimen counts of rape, involving 20 to 30 incidents, as well as one count of gross indecency and two indecent assaults upon the eldest son.
He admitted two counts of indecent assault upon the youngest child. Mrs Matthew-Stroud said the defendant ignored his elder son's protests.
Judge Philip Head told the defendant: "Your eldest son didn't know what to do in response to what his own father was doing.
"He had to reach the age of 17 before he had the robustness to put a stop to it."
The court heard the youngest boy stopped visiting his father from the age of eight to avoid further incidents.
Judge Head said: "Your sons are the victims of a gross betrayal of parental trust. You have blighted the entirety of their lives in the gravest possible way.
"You admit you knew what you were doing was wrong and illegal."
The judge ordered an additional five years be added to the defendant's licence period.
He was placed on a sexual offences prevention order, which included banning him from having unsupervised contact with males under 16.
He will also have to enlist on a sex offenders' register for life.
Sally Bamford, mitigating, said: "He is well aware he is going to receive a substantial jail sentence. His only mitigation is he has pleaded guilty, avoiding the victims the ordeal of giving evidence in court."

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) — The father of a young child who wound up on the piling of the downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan pedestrian bridge says she was never in any danger.
The child is 4 years old.
NBC affiliate WOOD spoke to her father Tuesday. He said he didn’t believe his daughter was ever in any danger.
“I’m not going to put my daughter in any harm,” said Hans Jansma, the little girl’s father. “That’s crazy.”
The photojournalist who captured the incident saw the girl’s father Hans Jansma and another adult standing on the bridge above the child.
Jansma was holding the other end of the rope wrapped around the girl’s waist.
Jansma referred to that rope Tuesday as a “safety rope.”

Father accused of killing his two children
Two deaths in less than two years
UPDATED 11:41 AM CDT Apr 24, 2013
SPRINGDALE, Ark. —40/29 News got new information Thursday night about the family of Travis Fox, the father who's accused of murdering his two babies. Police say Fox confessed to "violently shaking" his seven-month-old child and a six-month-old, who died more than a year ago.
On Sept. 2011, West Fork police investigated the suspicious death of a 6-month-old child. Investigators say the father, Fox, was a suspect, but the autopsy was inconclusive, and no arrest was ever made.
Wednesday in Springdale, police say it was the same situation, only this time it was Fox's 7-month-old that died, and police say this arrest may have saved the lives of other children.
"The wife might be expecting, but that's speculation. I can't confirm that," said Sgt. Kenneth Albright with the Washington County Sheriff's Department in a news conference on Thursday.
He was talking about Fox's wife. A woman who says she knows the family would not go on camera, but she also told 40/29 that Fox's wife is expecting.
Fox, only 24-years-old, faces two counts of first-degree murder. Police say the first child died in West Fork back in 2011, but the investigation came up empty.
"The child, a 6-month-old baby boy, was sent to the crime lab. The medical examiner performed an autopsy, at which time the results were undetermined," Albright said.
Investigators say there wasn't enough evidence to make an arrest, but when a 7-month-old died at Northwest Medical Center on Wednesday, investigators started connecting the dots.
"Deputy Coroner Randall Galloway was on scene assisting Springdale with that. He recognized the name from the previous West Fork death, advised the detectives of that, at which time they spoke with our office," Albright said.
That's when they brought Fox in for questioning, and police say he admitted to shaking the babies.
"He was interviewed by Washington County detectives as well as Springdale detectives, at which time he made a confession to shaking both babies, shaking them violently, and throwing them down onto the couch," Albright said.
He said this was a team effort between four different agencies, but if it weren't for the due diligence of the Washington County Coroner's Office the arrest might not have been made.
Counseling services are available to the investigators who covered this. The mother of the children is not facing charges right now, but police say the investigation continues.

Custodial dad found guilty of killing 10-year-old son (Dallas, Texas)
Custodial dad AARON RAMSEY found guilty of killing his son. Finally.
I have yet to see any explanation as to how or why this piece of crap had custody of this boy, or who was behind the custody decision. Notice that Mom is apparently fit, as she has custody of the other son.
Also notice that Dad withheld visitation for months, and yet was never held accountable. A custodial mother would never get away with this....

A North Texas father has been convicted of slowly starving to death his 10-year-old son, slipping his body in a sleeping bag and dumping it in a rural area where it wasn't discovered for over a year.
Aaron Ramsey, 35, was found guilty of severely injuring a child in the death of his son, Johnathan, after less than an hour of deliberations on Tuesday, and in just 20 minutes he was sentenced to life in prison by the Dallas County jury.
Prosecutors said the father locked his son in his room, where he slowly starved on a diet of bread and water.
They contend Ramsey dumped the child's emaciated body in a rural area south of Dallas in 2011. The boy's remains were found in the area a year ago in a creek.
Aaron Ramsey allegedly told police he limited the boy's meals to bread, water and sometimes milk for several months. According to police records, the boy was confined to his bedroom in the family's Dallas home.
The boy's mother, Judy Williams, and other relatives did not see him for months. Williams lives in New Mexico and has custody of the couple's other son, according to relatives.
Johnathan's grandfather, Edward Ramsey, had contacted police early last year to ask them to search for the child because he had not seen the boy for more than a year.
Police said Aaron and Elizabeth Ramsey, the child's stepmother, initially claimed the boy had gone to live with his mother but later confessed to starving the boy to death.
According to police, Aaron Ramsey said he put his son on 'military rations' because the boy began to misbehave early in 2011.
Ramsey said the boy had punched his stepmother in the stomach when she was pregnant, causing a miscarriage.
Ramsey said he hit Johnathan in the chest and then locked him in a bedroom, according to the records.
Johnathan was found lying on the bedroom floor in August, according to court records.
Aaron Ramsey told detectives he changed his son into his favorite T-shirt, placed him into a sleeping bag and inserted a dryer sheet to mask the smell of his body, the records said.
Elizabeth Ramsey also is charged with the crime and will be tried separately.

MEDFORD, Ore. — Southern Oregon authorities say a 6-year-old who ate methamphetamine from her father's baggie had an upset stomach but is otherwise in good health.
She was placed in foster care. He was booked on charges including child neglect and meth possession.
A Jackson County sheriff's deputy caught up with a 28-year-old Seattle man after reports Monday about suspicious behavior at a fast-food parking lot in Ashland.
At a traffic stop, the deputy reported, the girl said she'd eaten what looked like a "sort of gray" rock. She identified a bag containing more than 5 grams of meth.
Spokeswoman Andrea Carlson said the girl appeared to be OK: "She just complained of a stomach ache." She was treated at a hospital and released.
Carlson said the father faces arraignment Tuesday or Wednesday.

Father runs from bail bondsman, leaves kids home alone

KANSAS CITY, Mo – A father leaves behind his two small kids when a bail bondsman comes knocking on his door Monday.
Kevin Vetsch said he was bringing in 33-year-old Christopher Herald for failing to appear on a driving without a license ticket in Cass County.
Vetsch said he went to the home on James A Reed Road. Herald was home, but said he needed to wait for his wife to come home from work to watch the kids.
Vetsch said Herald went back in the home. About a half hour later, Vestch checked on the man again but the children told him their dad left.
Vetsch called the Department of Family Services and police.
All the while, you could see the children through the windows.
“It’s takes a different kind of person to leave your children alone and abandoned. He abandoned his children because he didn’t want to take care of his stuff, so I don’t know, you pray for those kids,” Vetsch said.
Police eventually picked up mom from work because she was dropped off. She didn’t want to speak on camera but told Fox 4 she has three kids, and the ones at home at the time were two and four years old.
She said this is not her husband’s nature. She said she thinks her husband took of because the family’s handyman Michael Reynolds was around to care for the kids.
Reynolds said he has worked for the family for about a month, but has known the family longer than that.
“I put my word on it that’s there’s no funny business going on. That dude is solid, he’s never done anything fishy that I know of anyway,” Reynolds said.
Police said they felt picking up mom was the most logical solution, partly because they did not find the kids living under terrible circumstances.
Police said DFS will check on the family Tuesday, as standard protocol.
It’s not clear what charges Herald will face, if any.

A man who believed his wife was cheating on him while she was working abroad stabbed their 12-year-old daughter to death in a jealous rage live on Skype, a court has heard.
The trial in Liberec, Czech Republic, has shocked the entire country after it was revealed the terrified girl had been heard pleading for her life and saying 'daddy, stop please.'
But the 64-year-old man, who has not been named for legal reasons, continued to stab the schoolgirl with the 12-inch kitchen knife while her horrified mother watched online.
She had pleaded with him to stop throughout the Skype video call, the court heard.
Prosecutors say the man was well aware of what he was doing and rejected any suggestion that he was suffering from diminished responsibility.
They said it was a brutal act of jealousy and revenge against his wife who had been working overseas to raise money for her family at the time.
Psychological tests showed the father is fit to stand trial although he has refused to speak since the incident. The case continues.

Father accused of seriously injuring baby diagnosed with multiple hematomas
Thursday, April 18, 2013
By Anna Rochelle, Staff Writer
In late September of 2012, a baby from Greene County, not quite three months old, was admitted to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis with bruises and swelling of his brain. Indiana State Police Detective Brian Smith was dispatched to the hospital.
Det. Smith first spoke with a case worker from the Department of Child Services (DCS) in Greene County who told him she had learned through speaking with doctors and nurses at Riley that the baby had multiple hematomas in his brain that were in different stages of healing and that it would take significant force to cause the injuries.
The investigation has been ongoing and on Wednesday the first arrest was made in the case.
David G. McNeal, 22, the baby's father, was booked into the Greene County Jail Wednesday.
The case was filed by Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw on April 12 and a warrant issued for McNeal's arrest. He turned himself in. His bond was set at $15,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $1,500 cash and was released later the same day. According to court records, McNeal is a resident of Worthington.
When McNeal appears in Greene Circuit Court next Wednesday for an initial hearing, he will be formally charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a class B felony, and neglect of a dependent causing bodily injury, a class C felony.
Late Thursday, the prosecutor filed another case in Greene Circuit Court also involving neglect of a dependent against the baby's mother, Jaycie A. Gouckenour. That case is pending.
During the investigation, Det. Smith conducted a number of interviews, talking with both father and mother, caseworkers, doctors and other personnel at Riley Hospital. He explained his findings in a lengthy probable cause affidavit.
According to the affidavit, McNeal and Gouckenour both said an incident had occurred with the baby on a Monday. McNeal said he was watching the baby while Gouckenour was at work. The baby had a bad diaper rash and when he changed the diaper, the baby started crying and got hysterical with crying. He allegedly said the baby's crying got so bad that the baby lost his breath and passed out, so he (McNeal) picked him up and shook him to wake him up. But that didn't work so he laid the baby down and rubbed his stomach and the baby did eventually wake up after 15-30 seconds. Then the baby was crying again so he bounced him to settle him down. He allegedly admitted that he did not support the child's neck when he was shaking him.
Both mother and father told the detective the baby seemed fine on Tuesday but on Wednesday the baby was acting funny. On Thursday they took the baby to see a doctor. The doctor ordered a scan and an x-ray, a hematoma was discovered and the baby sent from Bloomington to Riley Hospital by a Lifeline ambulance. The detective arrived at the hospital and began his investigation on Friday.
When questioned about how the child might have gotten multiple hematomas, the detective heard a story about how McNeal had been carrying the baby a couple of weeks earlier and had banged the baby's head on a bathroom door but it did not even leave a bruise.
Information, opinions and diagnosis, from four different doctors and a pediatric resident is detailed in the affidavit suggesting the baby suffered at least three injuries with one of them a fresh injury, that the baby had a huge subdural with lacerations on both sides of his brain, and that it would take violent force to cause these injuries. One doctor stated that the baby would not be the same after these injuries and would likely start to have developmental problems around age two, would most likely be learning disabled and have poor impulse control.
In addition, the affidavit notes that both doctors and the detective felt that the response of the parents had been inappropriate when speaking about the situation, and nonchalant about the significance of the injuries.
According to the affidavit, doctors at Riley have ruled out several possible causes of the hematomas including birth injuries, bleeding disorders, other routine trauma, and other uncommon causes, and that the injuries were caused only by dramatic violent events consistent with acceleration/deceleration injuries.
If McNeal were to be convicted of both counts, he could be facing eight to 20 years on the class B felony and two to eight years on the class C felony.
Greene County DCS remains involved with the case and the child has been placed in the care of other family members.
Working fathers are virtually never charged for the abuse inflicted by mothers. Moms are supposed to be omnisicent and omnipotent, don't ya know.

Father forces child to swallow glue
Date: 22 April 2013
A cloud of sadness is hanging around Dopeni village in the Nzhelele area, after a 35-year-old man, Kenneth Mudau allegedly forced his three-year-old daughter, Anza Mathada, to drink glue and die before committing suicide himself last Friday.
According to the police, the incidents follow a dispute with his wife over the child’s paternity. It was during the heated argument that wife allegedly told Mudau that the child was not his. “It appears that Mudau, who was apparently incensed by his wife’s revelations, could not contain his anger. He forced his daughter to drink glue and later committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree when he realised the child was dead," a police spokesperson said.
The police have stated that when the mother arrived at the house, she knocked on the door, but there was no response. She discovered the dead child lying in a bedroom. The mother of the child, Ms Ndidzulafhi Mathada said that the incident has really traumatised the whole family. "We were stunned by the tragic incident," she said. She added that the family could not afford to bury two people at the same time, because she doesn't work.
The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edward Tharaga, confirmed the incident. "We are continuing with investigations to try and found out what might have been the cause of the incident. We are appealing to members of the community to continue working with us in the fight against crime," said Tharaga.
The deputy chairperson of the South African Civic Organization (Sanco) in the village, Mr Mathew Masipala, said that the incident came as a shock to the entire community. "We are very concerned about the spate of killings in the area," he said. Masipala said that young people should always consult social workers, church organisations, Sanco and other structures when they have problems.
Vhakoma Vho-Livhuwani Mavhungu said that he was shocked by the incident. “This is very rare and strange in our community and we condemn it in the strongest terms. It happened in broad daylight and there were people out there who could have stopped the whole incident,” he added. He said that this was the first cruel incident of its kind in Dopeni village. He added that the family should know that the community shared their grief. “We know it is painful to lose loved ones, but we would like the family to accept it as it is. This is not the time to point fingers, but for the family to be more united than ever. We will be with you and give you the necessary support wherever possible,” he said.
