Why wasn't killer dad charged in his wife's murder? (Tacoma, Washington)
Sickening. It now looks like authorities had enough evidence to charge dad JOSH POWELL with the murder of his wife, but they authorities sat on their hands and did nothing. Daddy later went on to attack his sons with an ax and burn them to death during a "supervised" visitation. This POS was coddled and indulged every step of the way.

Court documents: Susan Powell's blood, hand-written note expressing fear were found in Utah home
By The Associated Press
TACOMA, Wash. -- Authorities investigating the 2009 disappearance of a Utah woman found her blood in the family home and a hand-written note in which she expressed fear about her husband and her potential demise, according to documents unsealed Friday.
The files raise further questions about why Susan Powell's husband was never charged in her disappearance before he killed himself and their two young sons in a gas-fueled inferno in Washington state earlier this year. Investigators in West Valley City, Utah, never arrested Josh Powell or even publicly labeled him as a suspect in Susan Powell's disappearance.
A prosecutor in Washington state who was getting a first look at the files Friday said if it was his case, he would have charged Josh Powell with murder.
"There is direct evidence. There is circumstantial evidence. There is motive," said Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist. "There is everything but the body."
The documents, used as justification to search the home where Josh Powell was staying last year, detail a widespread case that investigators had built against him.
Shortly after Susan Powell disappeared, authorities found blood evidence on a floor next to a sofa and determined that it was Susan Powell's. They found several life insurance policies on Susan Powell that totaled $1.5 million. The documents describe Josh Powell as unwilling to help in the investigation.
A safety deposit box used by Susan Powell had a hand-written letter titled "Last will & testament for Susan Powell," according to the documents. She wrote in that letter that she did not trust her husband and that they'd been having marital troubles for four years.
The letter also said that "if Susan Powell dies it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one," according to the documents.
Josh Powell always maintained his innocence and said he had taken their boys, then 2 and 4, on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures the night she disappeared.
Cops: Josh Powell murder-suicide house was sham
One of the children, Charlie, told investigators in an interview shortly after Susan Powell disappeared that she had gone on the camping trip with them but did not come back home and did not know why, according to the files. A few weeks later, he told a church teacher with no emotion: "My mom is dead."
Powell moved with the boys to his father Steve's home in Puyallup, Wash., but Steve Powell was arrested and charged with voyeurism and child pornography last September. The boys were placed with Susan Powell's parents for their safety.
On Feb. 5 — a few days after incestuous images found on his computer prompted a judge to order him to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation — Josh Powell locked a social worker out of his rental house, attacked the boys with a hatchet and then ignited the home in an explosive, gas-fueled inferno. The social worker was not injured.
Charlie Powell was 7; Braden Powell was 5.

A father in Cambodia reportedly chained his teenage son to a tree to punish him for skipping school to go to play online games, police said Thursday.
The 13-year-old was chained to a tree by his neck for nearly two hours before neighbors called the police and a locksmith came to free him, AFP reports.
"The father was so angry that he found his son at an Internet cafe instead of at school that he chained him up in public for people to see, to teach him a lesson," Battambang deputy police chief Cheth Vanny told AFP.
The boy's father, Sok Thoeun, reportedly fled the scene after the incident. He is now wanted on child abuse charges.
"He is still on the run," an official told AFP. "This kind of torture is not acceptable."

Non-custodial dad fatally beats 4-year-old daughter because she didn't know ABCs (Augusta, Georgia)
WILLIE JONES only had to take care of his 4-year-old daughter for two weeks, while the caretaker grandmother had surgery. Well, apparently Daddy couldn't even manage that. No word on what happened to the child's mother here.
Seems Daddy was pissed because his daughter didn't know the alphabet yet. So instead of teaching her--which any normal parent would do--he basically tortured her to death through beatings and inflicted burns.

A 4-year-old girl beaten to death last month received her fatal injuries because she didn’t know her ABCs, Assistant District Attorney Natalie Paine said Friday during a bond hearing for Willie Jones.
Jones, 22, is charged with murder in the death of his daughter, who was staying with him for two weeks while her grandmother recovered from surgery. Jones spent little time with his daughter, but it was hoped they could establish a better bond during their time together, Paine said.
Instead, numerous abuses were committed against the child, which Paine listed before Superior Court Judge William Fleming, who denied bond for Jones.
Paine said there were photos of Jones beating and dragging the child from the time she moved in with him Feb. 27. The girl was being punished for not knowing her ABCs or 123s, Paine said.
When the child was taken to the emergency room March 11, her body was covered in welts and bruises. Her back was striped with second-degree burns.
Paine said the girl’s injuries were caused by Jones beating her head with a shoe, a belt and a slender plastic rod used to open blinds. Both the belt and the rod broke from the force of Jones’ beatings, Paine said.
Jones apparently felt bad about the abuse and took the girl to the gas station to get candy. But witnesses at the store saw him taunt the girl, telling her to pick out candy then yelling at her, Paine said.
Jones was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty when his daughter was brought to the hospital. When he was informed she was taken off life support six days later, his response, according to Paine, was: “Man, I’m going away for life now.”
Fleming denied bond on the grounds that he poses a threat to the community.

TEMPLE - A man accused of murdering his infant child is now headed to trial.
On Wednesday, Temple Police Investigators presented a homicide case to the Bell County Grand Jury, and that jury indicted 18 year old Warren Hughes on the charge of murder.
The indictment follows a lengthy investigation into an infant death discovered by Temple Police back in November. Police arrived on that day to find the child unconscious at a residence in the 1600 block of Marlandwood Road. The child was taken to Scott and White by ambulance, but was unable to be revived and was pronounced deceased shortly afterward.
Temple Investigators and Texas Rangers gathered evidence from the scene and an autopsy was ordered.
The final result of the autopsy, interviews with family, evidence gathering and all follow-up investigatory processes led to the presentation to Grand Jury on Wednesday. The evidence suggested that Hughes caused fatal blunt force trauma to the infant.
Hughes was already in the Bell County Jail on an unrelated charge of Burglary of a Habitation. Bond was set at $100,000.

Court delays lead to sex assault charges stayed against father

Thirteen charges related to a father's alleged sexual and physical assault of his teenage daughter were stayed by a judge because there was a two-year delay in getting his statement to police translated into English.
VANCOUVER — Thirteen charges related to a father's alleged sexual and physical assault of his teenage daughter were stayed by a judge because there was a two-year delay in getting his statement to police translated into English.
It is a shocking case that Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, British Columbia's Representative for Children and Families, has raised multiple concerns about in a report released Thursday.
The failure to provide the translation services in a timely matter led to the judicial stay of proceedings for the 13 charges because the judge considered it a breach of the accused's right to a fair trial.
That decision, Turpel-Lafond said, sends a heartbreaking message to both the victim in this case and to victims in similar cases before the courts.
"It is so important that victims have the opportunity to come forward and that there is a prosecution. Prosecution allows individuals to be empowered and . . . it gives a sense of closure to have a trial," she said in an interview.
The shifting demographics of B.C. society make this case of particular concern, the report notes.
"The issue of access to justice services for immigrant children and families is of great concern to the Representative because of British Columbia's increasing ethnic and linguistic diversity," the report says.
"The events that are the subject of this report are symptomatic of the challenges to the justice system in British Columbia by immigration and changing demographics, particularly in relation to safeguarding children."
Turpel-Lafond makes several recommendations, including:
- That the Ministry of Justice develop a policy that requires that Senior Crown Counsel review all cases where a prosecution affecting the welfare or safety of a child could be adversely affected by procedural or investigatory barriers.
- That the Ministry of Justice ensure a reliable and appropriately funded system of access to accredited translation and interpretive services is available throughout all stages of an investigation and prosecution.
The attorney general's ministry has not yet responded to the report.

WINTER HAVEN --
A 3-month-old Winter Haven girl is dead, and her father is in jail after he allegedly punched her in the head because she wouldn't let him rest.
Christopher Scott Ryon, 27, was arrested and charged with manslaughter of a child Wednesday. Winter Haven detectives say he admitted to hitting baby Riley Ryon because she wouldn't stop crying when he wanted to lie down to take a nap.
According to Winter Haven police, an emergency medical call came in about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday after Kristina Bardell, the baby's mother, came home for lunch and found Riley unresponsive.
Bardell said she went into the bedroom, where the baby was lying face-down on the bed. When she turned Riley over, she saw she was not breathing and her face had a bluish tint.
The mother said she handed the baby to Christopher Ryon, who had been sleeping on the couch when she arrived, and called 911.
Winter Haven detectives, who were in the vicinity and heard the call, responded to the scene and took over CPR while emergency personnel were en route. When EMS crews arrived, they assumed resuscitation efforts and transported the baby to Winter Haven Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy conducted Thursday concluded the baby had a skull fracture 2.6 inches long, indicative of a blunt force trauma, police said.
Christopher Ryon was interviewed and arrested.
He got a $500,000 bond and will be appointed a public defender.

NORRISTOWN — A Towamencin father awaiting trial for allegedly fatally injuring his infant son by striking the child’s head against a sink wants to prevent a jury from hearing alleged incriminating statements he gave to detectives.
Jameel Earthy East, 23, of the 400 block of Lantern Lane, sat expressionless in a Montgomery County courtroom on Wednesday as his lawyer Kathryn L. Taxis argued two statements East gave to authorities were not “knowing or voluntary” and should be suppressed as prosecutorial evidence when East goes to trial later this year in connection with the June 25, 2011, death of his 3-month old son, Enzo. Taxis suggested East should have been provided his constitutional rights, or so-called Miranda warnings, earlier during the questioning period.
“When statements are taken, we want to make sure that the defendant is provided all constitutional protections,” Taxis, who was assisted by co-defense lawyer Jodie Lukens, argued to President Judge William J. Furber Jr. during the pretrial hearing.
Taxis suggested East could have had learning or psychological disabilities that could have prevented him from fully understanding questions posed to him and that East may have been suffering from a lack of sleep and emotional distress at the time of questioning because his child had died. “It’s on the heels of his son’s death,” argued Taxis, implying East, like “any reasonable person,” would be “worn down” and might simply acquiesce to detectives’ beliefs concerning the events.
East’s first statement was provided to detectives on June 25 while he was at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a second statement was given on June 28 at the Towamencin police station, according to testimony.
Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman argued East’s statements were voluntary and that detectives acted properly during the interrogation process.
“This is a public room in a children’s hospital. This was a very easy, free-flowing conversation in a very public area,” Cauffman said about the first statement, indicating the room was not secured and nothing prevented East from leaving.
As for the second statement, Cauffman, who was assisted by prosecutor Jordan Friter, argued East understood and could read the English language and even made corrections or additions to his written statement, indicating it was voluntary and not coerced.
“He was alert and responsive,” county Detective James McGowan testified regarding the questioning, adding East showed no signs of having any learning or emotional disabilities. “I believe he was aware of what was going on.”
Judge Furber took the matter under advisement and indicated he will issue a ruling on Thursday.
East, according to court documents, gave investigators inconsistent statements concerning the child’s injuries, either claiming he didn’t cause the child’s injuries or that the baby’s head struck a wall as East fell on a stairway while carrying the baby.
However, when East was confronted by detectives about his inconsistent statements, he allegedly explained that the child vomited on his shorts and that he carried the child to the bathroom to bathe him, court documents indicate.
East confessed he was “overwhelmed” as he entered the bathroom “and struck Enzo’s head against the hard counter surface between the two sinks,” according to the arrest affidavit.
“East said he heard a loud ‘bang’ as Enzo’s head struck the back of the counter below the mirror,” McGowan and Towamencin Police Sgt. Gary Wacker alleged in the arrest affidavit. “East described Enzo as appearing to be in ‘shock.’”
East, according to court papers, told detectives he bathed the baby and then noticed that Enzo was not breathing and that Enzo’s “eyes were rolling back into his head.”
East did not testify during Wednesday’s hearing. He would not comment to a reporter about the charges as he was escorted from the courtroom by sheriff’s deputies for the return trip to the county jail, where he is being held pending his trial in May.
East faces charges of third-degree murder and unsworn falsification to authorities in connection with the child’s fatal injuries. East faces a possible maximum sentence of 20-to-40 years in prison if convicted of third-degree murder.
With the charges, authorities alleged East knowingly or recklessly caused the death of the infant at East’s Towamencin home. Third-degree murder is a killing committed with malice.
The child was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m. June 25 and an autopsy determined the child suffered two skull fractures, caused by blunt cerebral trauma, court documents indicate.
Authorities alleged the investigation determined East was caring for the baby alone when the baby became ill and vomited on him.
An investigation of East began on June 25, when township police were notified about the baby’s injuries by officials of Montgomery County Children and Youth Services. Officials reported the unresponsive child had been transported from the Lantern Lane residence to Abington Lansdale Hospital on June 24 and then flown by medical helicopter to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The investigation determined that the child’s 18-year-old mother had taken the baby to East’s Lantern Lane home at about 3 a.m. June 24 so East could babysit the child. The child’s mother told authorities that earlier that morning the child had been treated at an area hospital for vomiting and had been released at 2:15 a.m.
The child’s mother said the child “seemed fine when she left the hospital and then drove directly to Jameel East’s home,” according to the arrest affidavit filed by McGowan and Wacker.

UPPER PITTSGROVE TWP. — An township man was arrested here Wednesday morning for allegedly injuring his 11-week-year-old baby daughter in early March, according to state police.
Thomas Lillibridge, 19, of the Canook Trailer Park on U.S. Route 40 here, was charged with third-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.
According to police, the baby girl is alleged to have been injured in an incident that took place on or near March 6.
State police said they became aware of the case after Lillibridge, the baby’s father, called 911 due to an emergency involving the infant and the baby was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The baby was first taken to South Jersey Healthcare-Elmer Hospital, but was later transferred to South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center in Vineland.
She was then later taken to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., for further treatment, police said.
The hospital staff, according to police, reported the child suffered from retinal hemorrhaging. The injuries were indicative of non-incidental trauma from shaken baby syndrome, police said.
“Detectives from the state police gathered evidence in this case and conducted interviews with hospital staff and doctors,” said State Police Sgt. Brian Polite. “From that they were able to gather enough evidence to make an arrest of the father of the infant.”
Lillibridge was arrested at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at his home in the Canook Trailer Park here in Upper Pittsgrove.
He was lodged in Salem County Correctional Facility, Mannington Township, in default of $50,000 bail.
State police said the baby is out of the hospital. She is recovering with her mother and is doing better, according to police.
State police said Lillibridge is the only suspect being considered in this case.

Dad who was convicted of killing son during "custody dispute" back in 2004 granted new trial (Maricopa County, Arizona)
All the complaints aside, it would be one awful big coincidence if this little boy just happened to drown after an "accidental" drug overdose when dad JEFFREY MARTINSON just happened to be in a "custody dispute" with Mom, and that Dad somehow forgot to call 911 before failing to kill himself.
Personally, I'm finding the Easter Bunny more believable....
Yet another dad who should have been denied child access.

Arizona man convicted of killing son granted new trial

Inadmissible testimony by a medical examiner and juror misconduct prompted a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to grant a new trial to a man convicted of killing his 5-year-old son in 2004.
Jeffrey Martinson, 45, was accused of giving a drug overdose to his son Josh and then attempting suicide. He was involved in a custody dispute with the boy's mother, and police and prosecutors assumed he was carrying out a murder-suicide. However, prosecutors charged him with felony murder -- meaning that the child died because of child abuse -- rather than premeditated murder.
In his defense, Martinson claimed he thought the boy had drowned in the bath tub, and that he tried to kill himself because he was distraught over his son's drowning. Defense attorneys Michael Terribile and Treasure VanDreumel also argued that Josh may have taken the drugs found in his system himself, without Martinson's knowledge.
During the trial, a medical examiner opined that the manner of death was homicide, which he deduced from information police had provided him, including the custody battle and the fact that Martinson did not call 911.
The jurors found Martinson guilty of first-degree murder last November. They then found aggravating factors that would qualify him for the death penalty, but hung on whether to sentence Martinson to death or to life in prison.
Before the court could impanel a new jury to decide the sentence, a juror came forward to claim that the jury forewoman had refused to let other jurors see evidence and had pressured some into returning a guilty verdict. Furthermore, he claimed that jurors were talking about the case at lunch, which is forbidden.
At the insistence of Terribile and VanDreumel, Judge Sally Duncan held evidentiary hearings to ascertain whether juror misconduct had occurred. The jury forewoman had already disclosed that her late husband, a law-enforcement officer, had been killed by another police officer. That in itself would not have disqualified her for jury service. But over the course of extensive testimony, Duncan found that the woman had downplayed the impact her husband's death had on her ability to be fair and impartial in Martinson's trial.
The jury forewoman, who had some paralegal training and worked for the Arizona Supreme Court in a non-legal capacity, had overstated her legal knowledge to other jurors, Duncan found. She failed to disclose that she had been the victim of a crime perpetrated by her daughter, and failed to mention that her late husband had once worked as a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy. She also used scatological terms to refer to Martinson in front of other jurors and derided his lawyers and expert witnesses, saying it was their job to lie and confuse the jury.
In her ruling Tuesday, Duncan wrote, "The inference that can be drawn from Juror 14's pattern of misconduct is that she first sought to secure a seat on the jury and then successfully sought to position herself to be selected as its foreperson ... Juror 14 frustrated the (jury selection) purpose and process by concealing her personal biases which ultimately, as the record plainly reveals, blossomed into prejudice that infected the trial to the Defendant's substantial prejudice. It is not relevant whether Juror 14 intended to subvert the process. The fact remains that she did."
Duncan also cited a recent Arizona Court of Appeals opinion, published as she was considering Martinson's retrial, regarding testimony of medical examiners. Martinson's attorneys had asked that the medical examiner not give his opinion as to whether Josh's death was a homicide because it was not based on medical evidence. Duncan allowed the testimony, but wrote in her ruling Tuesday that she had erred and the testimony was unfairly prejudicial to Martinson. That in itself, she ruled, was grounds for a retrial.
Martinson's next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.

Merrillville man found guilty of neglect, not murder, in baby’s death

Lake Superior Court jurors convicted a Merrillville man of neglect of a dependent in the death of his infant daughter, but acquitted him of a murder charge.
After about eight hours of deliberations, jurors also deadlocked on battery and aggravated battery charges against Nelson Julian Santiago, who faces from 20 to 50 years at his May 4 sentencing hearing before Judge Diane Ross Boswell.
Prosecutors argued that Santiago intentionally killed 5-month-old Juliana Klobucar by violently shaking her, while the defense countered with its own expert who raised other scenarios to the state’s shaken baby syndrome.
In his closing argument, deputy prosecutor Michael Woods said Juliana beat the odds after being born about seven weeks’ premature, but died a violent death at the hands of her father for whom she was named.
Woods reminded the eight-woman, four-man jury of testimony that Santiago, 21, was disappointed that his then-girlfriend was pregnant with a girl and asked her to give up the child for adoption. Santiago didn’t put his name on the birth certificate and had lived with the child’s mother, Ann Marie Klobucar, their young son and Juliana for about a week before the baby’s suffered a subdural hematoma, brain swelling and retinal hemorrhaging on July 28, 2010.
Klobucar said she received a text from Santiago asking whether the children had insurance. When she called him, she learned that something was wrong with the baby, who was airlifted to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Comer authorities and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office ruled the case was child abuse.
Defense expert Jan Leetsma suggested the child had suffered a bleeding episode on the brain from an earlier injury that could have started bleeding anew or that the child could have a blood clotting abnormality inherited from her mother.
In his closing argument, defense attorney Matthew LaTulip criticized the state’s medical witnesses for failing to look at prior medical history, including the fact the child had been strapped in a car seat when her mother totaled her car in a crash two months before the baby was injured.
As little Juliana continued to suffer severe seizures in a Chicago hospital bed, Woods argued that Santiago headed out to celebrate his birthday with friends, according to a post on Facebook introduced as evidence. “On my way 2 bdubs 2 smash N chillax with my peoples. Folks this my might very well b my last nite 2 breath FREE AIR so I’m gonna make the best of it N hopeful all my peoples show up,” the post states.
Jurors also heard Santiago’s statement to police in which he asked if tickling the child too hard could have caused the injuries. LaTulip told jurors Santiago was “a typical parent trying to figure out what happened to his baby.”

Dad finally charged for killing 1-month-old son in 2007, but only after critically injuring his 3-month-old son last week (Shreveport, Louisiana)
Whey did it take five whole years for dad KENNETH WILLIS to be charged with killing his 1-month-old son in 2007? We only figure out that this dude is bad news after his 3-month-old son turns up injured? Lack of evidence from before? Really?

A Shreveport man has been arrested in connection with the death one of his children from five years ago and injuries to his 3-month old son this week.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Greenwood Road to a welfare concern. When police arrived, they contacted Teka Keller, the owner of a local daycare, who reported a 3-month old boy she was taking care of had some suspicious injuries.
Keller showed authorities a cellphone picture of the child and provided them with the name and address of the child. Detectives were immediately notified.
Investigators went to the child’s home at an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Tierra Drive and contacted the mother and father, 27-year old Kenneth Willis, of the baby.
Detectives noted the baby seemed lethargic and immediately called EMS crews to take the baby to a hospital.
Willis and the child’s mother were taken to the Shreveport Police Complex where they were both questioned and later released. At that stage of the investigation, detectives were awaiting a report from hospital personnel as to the extent of the child’s injuries.
Investigators later discovered that in February of 2007, Kenneth Willis had a 1-month old son, Zamian Willis, who died after being taken to a local hospital similar circumstances. It was later determined Zamian died as the result of head injuries and multiple fractures.
Detectives investigating the case named Kenneth Willis as a possible suspect and forwarded their findings to the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office. Officials there reviewed the case and told investigators there was not enough evidence to move forward with an arrest.
On Thursday, detectives learned the injuries sustained by Willis’ 3-month old child were not consistent with any kind of accidental fall.
Investigators took Willis into custody Thursday afternoon following interviews. He is charged with one count of second degree murder in connection with the death of Zamian Willis and one count of second degree cruelty to a juvenile in connection with the injuries sustained by his 3-month old child.
Authorities also arrested 30-year old Teka Keller, the day care owner, for failing to immediately report the injuries to the child. Over 8 hours passed from the time Keller allegedly first saw the injuries and reported the incident to authorities. Keller was issued a summons and released.
The toddler is currently in critical condition and on life support at a local hospital.

Dads: If crying child bugs you, get out of the room (Henderson, North Carolina)
The politically incorrect truth about fathers and infant care....Whether they're working-class guys or professionals (psychiatrists), men (as a general rule) do not respond with empathy to a crying infant. They respond with hostility.

On March 21, the Hendersonville Times-News published an article about a man being charged "with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury after a 29-day-old baby boy suffered multiple fractures and external bruising in February." The injured child is his son.
I do not know any of the circumstances involved, but I can speculate. I wrote the following some time ago, hoping it might prevent at least one such occurrence:
Last year, a Bryson City man was sentenced to three years in prison for severely beating his 4-month-old twin sons, even breaking their legs. Apparently they would cry "and get on his nerves." A heinous crime, no doubt perpetrated by some low-life psychotic scumbag. After all, how many reasonable people would ever want to hit such young children for crying?
Plenty. I will admit my children's cries "got on my nerves." I didn't beat them, but the impulse was there. And I think most men know that impulse, if they are honest with themselves. We can deny the human condition, but that won't change it. It's like we're hard-wired to leave the cave and go kill a woolly mammoth when we hear a child crying. For me, I learned to check to ensure the child was fine, and then just leave the room, maybe crank the stereo a bit.
Ten years ago, my wife and I were running a commercial fishing business in Canada. We had a young couple from Newfoundland working for us. The couple became pregnant and decided to move home to Newfoundland to be with family as they awaited their first child. We threw them a going-away party.
A father for many years, I wanted to give the young man some advice. After several drinks and much laughter, I turned to Billy.
"Billy, I've got some advice for you. If the baby is crying and driving you crazy, just check to make sure the kid's OK, doesn't have a wet diaper, isn't hungry, is safe in the crib. Then get out of the room."
Billy just nodded, looked a little quizzical, but seemed to get the message. I hoped he would remember it, should such a moment arise. I thought it was the best advice I could give him based on my own experiences, and the all-too frequent stories in the media of people, mostly men, hurting children of all ages. The shaken-baby syndrome. I do not believe all these people are evil incarnate, because I have wanted to silence the cries of my own children. Nobody told me I could just leave the room, just get away.
My wife overheard what I said to Billy and was aghast. How could I say such things to a soon-to-be father? How negative could I be? And to advise him to leave the child alone?
A week later, I related all this to my psychiatrist cousin, Wray. He told me a story.
Like the Bryson City man, Wray had twin sons, who are now in their early 30s. He was working as a psychiatrist in Cleveland, as was his psychiatrist wife. Wray's wife left the house for work at 7 a.m.; Wray left at 8, when the nanny would arrive. Wray was responsible for the infant boys for only one hour each morning.
"One of the boys woke up and started crying," Wray said. "Just one. And I wanted to throw that f------ kid out the window."
"And I'm a trained psychiatrist," he added.
Wray explained to me that he had no money troubles, no mortgage worries, no employment issues and had a good relationship with his wife. Plus a nanny coming in one hour.
"And yet I wanted to throw the kid out the window," he said. "What about the poor guy who dropped out of high school, can't find work or money to pay the rent, and hasn't anyone coming to relieve him in the foreseeable future? How bad must it be for him?"
I don't know anything about the Bryson City man going to jail for three years, but I'm sure everyone would agree it would have been better for all involved if he had just left the room. Whether the kids had dirty diapers or not.
I have long wished for public service ads on television, radio or print to carry this message to new parents and caregivers: If the kid is driving you nuts or "getting on your nerves," get out of the situation. Make sure the kid is safe, and then — Get out of the room!

Dad previously convicted of fracturing baby's skull now accused of abusing 6-month old and 2-year-old (Bartlesville, Oklahoma)
Whoa. Wait a second. Who left these babies in this father's "care"? The mother? Was this voluntary? Was dad STEVEN GEORGE MOLAND the "primary care provider"? If not, why was he in charge of getting these kids ready for the babysitter? He was the father of one (the youngest?), but not the father of the other? Was this a girlfriend's child from a previous relationship or what? A lot is not explained here....
With this guy's history of serious child abuse (i.e. fracturing the skull of his 2-month-old son in 2004), who the hell thought it was a good idea to put this dude in charge of two young children???

BARTLESVILLE -- A 28-year-old man convicted in 2004 of fracturing the skull of a baby is back behind bars in Washington County accused of harming a 6-month-old and a 2-year-old.
Steven George Moland, of Bartlesville, was charged this week with felony child abuse involving two children who were left in his care. District Judge Curtis DeLapp, who sent Moland to prison for 5 years on his previous conviction, this week set a $50,000 bond in his new case.
According to a court affidavit, two babysitters noticed the children had bruises and scratches on them and called police to investigate on Friday. Police noted there were bruises on the upper arms, legs and bottom of the toddler, and red marks and scratches on the face, neck and back of the 6-month-old.
Moland, who is the father of one of the children, allegedly told police he became angry with the children while trying to get them ready to go to the babysitters.
In February 2004, Moland plead no contest in Washington County District Court to a 2003 child abuse charge. Moland, who was 20 years old at the time, told police he did not hurt his 2-month-old, but commented that the baby "did not like" him and "would not stop crying."
The infant, who had been left in Moland's care, was diagnosed with a skull fracture and brain injury. DeLapp issued a 10-prison term with five years to serve and ordered Moland to complete parenting classes, anger management classes and his GED. DeLapp also had ordered all contact Moland had with children under the age of 5 years to be supervised.

Oklahoma City police investigate possible child abuse case
Oklahoma City police are investigating the injury of a 3-month-old boy who suffered a leg fracture.

Police are investigating a possible case of child abuse after a 3-month-old boy was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital with a leg fracture.
Officers were called shortly before 8 p.m. March 18 to Mercy Health Center in reference to the injured child.
Medical staff said the child's father told doctors he lifted the baby by the ankles to change his diaper, and his son started to roll away from him.
The father said he went to pull the child back toward him when he heard a popping sound, according to the report.
A doctor said the story was not consistent with the type of injury the infant suffered.
“It takes a tremendous amount of twisting force,” the doctor told police, adding that the child would need surgery.
Police said the father appeared visibly upset.
The father told officers he knew something was wrong with his son when the baby became quiet and wouldn't move his left leg.
The case is under investigation.
Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said the child has been released from the hospital and placed in protective custody.

March 27th, 2012 by Jessica King
William Olsen, 21, has been arrested and charged with suspected child abuse and assault after his infant daughter was brought to a hospital in eastern Minnesota with at least 21 broken bones. Olsen reportedly admitted to authorities that he would routinely squeeze the infant and pick her up by her extremities. Court documents reveal that the 7-week-old newborn underwent emergency surgery where doctors identified 21 broken bones and another five which were likely fractures.
The incident occurred on March 22nd. The injuries were reportedly discovered during a routine check up, however, the clinic who reported the injuries to police also said that they released the infant back to the custody of the family. When deputies followed up, they had the infant transported to the University of Minnesota Hospital.
Court documents revealed:
“Fractures were discovered in: 7 ribs, left clavicle, left humerus, left femur, left tibia, left metatarsal, right tibia and fibula as well as the skull.”
According to Northland’s Newscenter, medical staff believe that the injuries may be so severe, the baby may suffer from permanent disfigurement.
Olsen is currently in custody at the Pine County Jail in Minnesota. His bail was set at $30,000 if Olsen agrees to house arrest.

ANNANDALE, VA (WUSA)-- Fairfax County Police are investigating a murder-suicide that hits close to home. John Jackson, a former sergeant with the department and his 13-year-old daughter, Alexis, were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a sport-utility vehicle in Annandale.
The car was parked in the driveway of a home on Forest Grove Drive in the Sleepy Hollow Neighborhood. Neighbors say the home has been owned by the teenager's grandparents for the last thirty years, but that her mother also lives there.
"It's just horrible. It's the worst thing. I can't even believe that we live here and that happened," said Doris Kinder, a neighbor who says she heard three gunshots."
Fairfax County Police are calling it an apparent murder-suicide, but they're still investigating who pulled the trigger and why. Police say they won't know for sure what happened until the medical examiner is done determining the cause and manner of death.
John Jackson of Falls Church left the Fairfax County Police department in 2010 after serving sixteen years. Most recently, the 40-year-old ran a landscaping and waste removal company with his brother in Woodbridge. Alexis Jackson was in the 7th grade at Glasgow Middle School.

Dad leaves baby and toddler in hot van as he shops for guns, but not charged (Katy, Texas)
UNNAMED DAD has been coddled by the police and not charged, though the babies were screaming and in obvious distress by the time parametics rescued them. Even the owner of the gun store where Daddy was shopping for almost an hour is totally disgusted, especially given Daddy's indifference to the children's welfare.

Children Left in Hot Van as Father Shopped for Guns

KATY, Texas - A man leaves a baby and toddler in a hot van while he spends an hour shopping for guns at a store in Katy.
It happened on a day when the Houston area saw record-breaking heat. Thankfully, both children are going to be fine, but the owner of Tactical Firearms is fuming over what happened next, and he has it all on camera.
"Look, they are driving off. 'Have a nice day. Go commit another felony somewhere else,'" said Jeremy Alcede, the store's owner.
The driver, believed to be the father of the two children, has not been arrested or charged.
"I said, 'Are you kidding me? You left your kids in the car.' And he said, 'Awww.' That was it. Not, 'Oh my God, are my kids okay?' He just goes, 'Awww," said Alcede.
The state of the art surveillance system at Tactical Firearms captured the man shopping for guns for almost an hour while his five-month-old baby and 18-month-old child are in the back of a blue van.
The father parked the van at 11:53 a.m. and went inside the store.
The temperature was in the mid 70s under clear skies at 12 p.m. Saturday. Alcede says the front window was slightly cracked.
28 minutes pass when the customer parked next to the van hears the babies screaming and calls 911.
"These babies were sweating. You could see it," said Alcede.
"We actually came in the store looking for a parent and could not identify one. No one stepped up and said, 'Yeah, that's my van or those are my children,'" said Nicholas Arrighi, an employee of Tactical Firearms.
The man is still inside shopping as paramedics show up and get the kids out. The Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office responded and said the children did not appear to be dehydrated.
"I am a father first and business owner second, and I'll be damned if anybody wastes their money buying my stuff when their kids are being pushed off as second class citizens," said Alcede.
Parked cars get dangerously hot even on cool days. Animation from San Francisco State University shows when the termperature is 80 degrees outside, it's 114 degrees inside a car after just 30 minutes. Texas law says parents cannot leave a child under age 7 alone in a car for more than five minutes.
"It's a slam dunk case. You just told me the law, I just showed you the footage. Everybody was aware, and they drove off," said Alcede.
Precinct 5 deputy constables say the Harris County District Attorney's Office declined to accept charges, referring the case to Child Protective Services.
"The (deputy) constable himself, the conversation we had, he wanted them to go to jail, but he said my hands are tied," said Alcede.
The children's mother showed up almost two hours later. The family was free to go. Watching the whole ordeal on video brings Alcede to tears. He hopes to never see the man in his store again, but he won't soon forget the look on two children's faces.
FOX 26 News was unable to reach the district attorney's office for comment. CPS is trying to determine whether anyone contacted them about the case.

Dad jailed for 15 years for repeatedly raping teen daughter, impregnating her (Sligo, Ireland)
UNNAMED DAD, and no mention of a mother in the home. Was there one? Or is this a custodial father? Either way, why was a man who had a PREVIOUS CONVICTION FOR RAPING ANOTHER TEENAGE GIRL allowed to have his daughter live with him?

Sligo man jailed 15 years for raping daughter, fathering child
Mar 26th, 2012, 2:59 pm
A Sligo man has been jailed for 15 years for the repeated rape and sexual abuse of his teenage daughter which led to him fathering her child.
The Central Criminal Court heard the abuse began in September 2005 when she was 13 and continued for 2 years.
”I trusted my dad, he was my hero growing up – I never knew what he was doing to me, I always felt it was my fault and I was ashamed of myself”.
The words of the now 19-year-old victim who told the court she does not want her dad dead or alive, she just wishes he had never existed.
In her victim impact evidence she said when social services and school liaison officers came to the house in her head she was screaming ‘He is abusing me’ but that there was always an emotional ball and chain keeping her quiet.
She was just 13 when the abuse began at their Sligo home.
Within 2 years she was pregnant with his child.
Her 48-year-old father has a previous conviction for rape and sexual abuse of another teenage girl.

Dad with extensive criminal history (including domestic violence) accused of killing 7-week-old daughter (North Fort Myers, Florida)
Dad STEVEN CANTRELL is a walking disaster. Yet the State of Florida just let him slide along, never really holding him responsible for his criminal actions. So you leave a father with an extensive history of violence alone with a newborn child--what do you think is going to happen? Well, that's what happened....

NORTH FORT MYERS, FL -
A North Fort Myers man is charged with killing his seven-week old daughter, according to deputies.
On March 23rd, around 4:05 p.m., deputies responded to 18601 Palm Creek Drive in North Fort Myers after getting a 9-1-1 call about an unconscious infant.
When they got to the scene, deputies learned the child had been taken to the hospital.
Because of the nature of the injuries, detectives from the Major Crimes Unit were notified and sent to the hospital.
Deputies say medical evidence and information from emergency room workers showed the child suffered severe head trauma, including multiple skull fractures. Officials with the ER said the child, Jada Cantrell, died as a result of her massive traumatic head injuries.
Jada lived at home with her mother, father and grandfather.
Detectives say the baby was at home alone with her father, 21-year-old Steven Cantrell, at the time her injuries occurred.
When questioned, Cantrell allegedly gave detectives conflicting explanations about what happened to the infant.
Deputies say none of the explanations Cantrell gave were plausible.
Based on the documentation of the scene, recovered evidence, witness statements and the victim's documented fatal injuries, detectives arrested and charged Steven Cantrell with one count of First Degree Felony Murder.
Cantrell has had frequent encounters with law enforcement. He was arrested in February on a probation violation; the month prior Cape Coral police arrested him for giving a false ID to an officer. He pleaded 'no contest' and appears to have been sentenced to 'time served,' but it's not clear from State Attorney's Office website records.
In November 2010, he was charged with robbery in Lee County. That case was dropped at the request of the victim.
In August 2010, he was arrested for aggravated assault and property damage. The State Attorney's Office chose not to file formal charges.
In September 2009, Cantrell was arrested by deputies for robbery, burglary, grand theft auto, theft, trespassing and probation violation. He pleaded 'no contest' to the robbery and trespassing. There was no information on the other charges.
In July 2009, he was arrested by deputies for resisting an officer with violence, giving a false ID to a deputy, resisting an officer without violence and domestic violence battery. Cantrell pleaded 'no contest' to resisting without violence and domestic battery. There was no information on the other counts.

Dad accused of throwing 13-month-old son (Chicago, Illinois)

Police: Man accused of child endangerment after throwing baby

A man was charged with child endangerment after throwing his 13-month-old boy during an argument with officers in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.
Ahmad Boyd, 22, of the 7200 block of South Albany Avenue, was charged with endangering the life and health of a child, obstruction of traffic and resisting a peace officer, all misdemeanors, police said
Boyd was with a large group standing in the street and sitting on cars outside near the intersection of Laverne Avenue and Quincy Street Saturday about 6:45 p.m. Sunday. As police approached, they saw Boyd holding a 13-month-old boy while sitting on a trunk of a car parked on the street, police said.
When officers asked if he would move to the sidewalk for the child’s safety, he said: “This is my car, I’m in front of my house, this is my baby, and I can do whatever the hell I want with him,’’ according to a police report.
As police got out of their car, Boyd refused to move to the sidewalk and told the officer “f--- you, b----" before throwing the child into “mid air” to another person he did not know, placing the child’s life in danger, the report said.
Boyd then ran way but police chased after him. He was apprehended after running through traffic and was subdued with a Taser, police said. Boyd was taken to Loretto Hospital and released.

Custodial dad arrested after 2-year-old son placed on life support (Stockton, California)
Kudos to reporter Leigh Paynter for covering this story. Most of the time, the backstory to these abuse cases is totally ignored. Not this time. Now we find out that a case we started following just recently involved not just an abusive father, but an abusive father who OBTAINED FULL CUSTODY despite a history of domestic violence. We also see how the protective mother was charged with felony kidnapping for trying to protect the child, and ultimately "reunited" with the abuser dad in order to try to protect the child. For her trouble, she was regularly assaulted while the authorities continued to ignore her pleas. This happens way more often than the mainstream press lets on.
The dad is identified as TUSHAMBI EVANS.

2-year-old on life support after father's abuse

STOCKTON, CA - A 2-year-old boy is on life support after he was severely beaten by his own father, according to Stockton police.
The boy's mother said she had been warning law enforcement and the court system for months that she and her son were being abused.
Friday night, Oakland police notified the Stockton Police Department that a child arrived at Oakland Children's Hospital with life threatening injuries and the father's story was suspicious.
Stockton police arrested the boy's father, Tushambi Evans, 28, and charged him with felony child abuse. Evans was arrested at a home on the 500 block of 6th Street where his wife said she and her son endured months of physical abuse.
"The baby would sit right here, he'd feed him, but the baby would throw it up and he's pick up the throw up and make the baby eat it," mother Jamela Evans said.
Jamela Evans said she's known her husband since the sixth grade, but the abuse started after their son, Tushambi Evans Jr, was born. Jamela Evans said she left her husband last May, but through legal actions, he ended up with full custody of their son.
Jamela Evans said she ran off with her son once, but was arrested for felony child kidnapping.
She moved from their home in Vallejo to Stockton, but invited Tushambi Evans and their son to come back and live with her. She said the abuse started to escalate in recent weeks.
"He was slapping the baby, hitting the baby on the back, dropping the baby on his head, throwing him against the wall like he was a doll," Jamela Evans said. "It started getting worse and worse. If I was to intervene in what he was doing, I'd get jumped on. I'm bruised up right now from him jumping on me."
Jamela Evans showed a bruise on her chin she claims is from being punched by Tushambi Evans.
According to Jamela Evans, her husband found out that she was secretly recording his abuse Thursday night and attacked her. She said she ran to a neighbor for help, but Tushambi Evans took off with her car and her son. It wasn't until Saturday morning that she learned what happened to her little boy.
"I was told that my son was dead when he arrived at the hospital, but that doctors revived him," Jamela Evans said. "He's now on life support, but may have brain damage."
She said she's praying her son survives his injuries and grieves for not being able to protect him.
"I hope he doesn't hate me. I hope he doesn't think his mama didn't want him," Jamela Evans said. "He's probably wondering why he's not with his mama."
Tushambi Evans was booked in San Joaquin County Jail. Jamela Evans' other children are in custody of Child Protective Services while the investigation continues.

(KMOV) – Robert Belanger, 27, was charged Saturday for allegedly kicking and throwing his five-year-old son. He is the second man charged with child abuse on Scott Air Force Base property in as many days.
Investigators say Belanger’s son showed up Friday at Scott Elementary School with red marks on the chin and neck. A teacher asked him what had happened and the boy claimed his father picked him up by his neck, threw him and then kicked him when he was lying on the ground crying.
The boy said the incident took place Thursday evening.
A school nurse who examined the child noticed additional bruises on his back and shoulders. The school contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Scott Air Base law enforcement.
After a thorough interview, officers arrested Belanger.
Belanger worked for the United States Coast Guard in St. Louis before the arrest.
The St. Clair County State’s Attorney issued charges against Belanger Saturday for 1st degree aggravated battery and domestic battery. St. Clair County Judge Heinz Rudolph signed a warrant and set bond at $300,000.
In an unrelated incident, James P. Jennings was charged Friday for allegedly abusing his step-son on Scott Air Force Base property.

2nd run-walk puts child abuse in spotlight (Bloomington, Illinois)

2nd run-walk puts child abuse in spotlight
By: Ryan Denham | Yesterday
BLOOMINGTON – A Central Illinois mother whose young sons were killed by their father is trying to keep their memory alive with a 5K run and one-mile walk.
The second annual Taking Steps to End Child Abuse is set for April 15 at Tipton Park in Bloomington. Proceeds benefit the Family Visitation Center at the Children’s Foundation of Children’s Home + Aid in Bloomington.
Amy Leichtenberg lost her sons, Jack and Duncan, in 2009, a tragic end to a domestic dispute and custody battle with the boys’ father. She helped launch the run-walk last year, in honor of her boys, and the timing is deliberate. April 10 is Jack’s birthday, and April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Last year’s inaugural event raised almost $10,000, she said, with about 700 participants.
“After everything happened, you have two choices. You can let it kill you, or you can rise above it. And I decided to rise above it, and try to do some good works in their name,” Leichtenberg said of her sons.
The Family Visitation Center, or FVC, is described as a “safe, neutral site” for visitation between non-custodial parents and their children. But “due to reduced funding of this program by the state of Illinois, proceeds of this race will be used to increase the level of critical support to clients of the FVC,” organizers said.
Leichtenberg said her sons once used the Children’s Home + Aid facilities.
“That’s why I feel strongly about supporting them,” she said. “At the time when the boys were using their facilities, they were going to be losing their funding, and that was one of the reasons they had to have unsupervised visits.”
Registration by mail or online by April 6. It’s $25 for a single participant, $40 for two, or $50 for a family or team. Children 11 years old and under are free.

Dads among suspects arrested over international child porn ring (Australia)

Police disgusted by porn haul
Raw vision from the Australian Federal Police press conference after officers smashed a global child porn ring
FOURTEEN men, including fathers, have been arrested across eastern Australia following the discovery of hundreds of thousands of pornographic images and videos of children.
Australian Federal Police searched 19 premises in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and the ACT and laid 27 charges after receiving a tip-off from Interpol last December.
The peer-to-peer file sharing network, which involves the sharing of information without using a central server, was originally discovered in Germany.
AFP cybercrime operations manager Glen McEwen said hundreds of thousands of images and videos were seized and some involved toddlers.
“They are atrocious,” he told reporters in Melbourne.
“Allow me to place on record my personal disgust of the abhorrent nature of activity associated with the exploitation of children.”
The arrested men were aged between 21 to 64 and some were fathers, Commander McEwen said.
Police disgusted by porn haul
“The reach of the internet, which has no geographical physical boundaries, attracts all walks of life,” Commander McEwen said.
“You just never know who could be involved in this.”
The charges cover accessing, making available and possessing child pornography.
The terabytes of images and videos were found on hard drives, laptops, mobile phones and portable storage devices.
Commander McEwen said the AFP would work with international agencies to determine the identities of the victims depicted.
He said he didn't know if any Australian children were involved but various ethnicities were represented in the material.
A 15th man was assisting the AFP with its inquiries.
The Victorian men were arrested in Warranwood, Bulleen, Kings Park, Croydon and Southbank.
In NSW, arrests were made in Colyton, Neutral Bay, Petersham, Carramar and Dulwich Hill, while in Queensland police made arrests in Mount Warren Park.
Police also arrested men in Franklin and MacGregor in the ACT.
A 21-year-old Bulleen man and Warranwood man, aged 62, were expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
Federal Justice Minister Jason Clare welcomed the arrests, which followed a covert AFP operation code named Operation Belfort.
“This is a really important breakthrough - smashing an alleged child exploitation ring and taking hundreds of thousands of child exploitation images and videos out of circulation,” he said in a statement.

"Stay-at-home" dad sentenced to life term in death of 3-month-old daughter (Seaford, Maryland)
Seems dad JASON GALLOWAY was an unemployed (deadbeat) "stay-at-home" from the time his daughter was six-weeks old to the time he killed her at 3 months. Daddy apparently abused her the entire time, given the evidence of prior injuries....Mom is honestly still trying to believe in reversed gender roles and that Daddy didn't mean to hurt the baby....

Seaford man sentenced to life term in infant daughter's death
His wife asks for leniency in decision

GEORGETOWN -- A Seaford man was sentenced to life in prison for the death of his 3-month-old daughter from what a prosecutor called "horrifically cruel and depraved" abuse.
As he imposed the sentence on Jason Gallaway, Superior Court Judge Richard F. Stokes said the infant, Marissa, "suffered at his hands from the time he took over her care" in her sixth week of life.
Gallaway said nothing as he was led from the courtroom after sentencing. His wife, Heather Gallaway, had implored Stokes for a sentence less harsh than a life term.
"I don't even want to go home now. I have no one," she said in court. "My whole family is gone."
Their daughter died in December 2010, a few days after she had been hospitalized with a skull fracture and bleeding in her brain. Prosecutors contended that Jason Gallaway slammed her head on a hard surface. Gallaway maintained she'd fallen accidentally out of his lap. He said he loved his daughter.
"The prosecutor went out of her way to prove I'm guilty," he told the judge. "But I know I'm not guilty."
Prosecutor Melanie Withers disagreed. Heather Gallaway was a teacher, and her husband cared for their daughter when she returned to work.
"Every day that her mother went to work was another day of pain and torture for this child," Withers told the judge. "There is no doubt that she died in her father's care. She should be growing up. She should have a future ... and he took all that away from her."
Gallaway was arrested Dec. 2, 2010, when he called 911 to report Marissa had stopped breathing. She was rushed to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, diagnosed with a fractured skull and three bleeds on her brain, then transported to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland, Del. Gallaway told police he had dropped Marissa on the floor twice -- once that day, once the day before, both times by accident.
Heather Gallaway, in asking for leniency, said her husband is a better person than the court believes.
"I've heard that, basically, my husband didn't have value. Because he didn't have a job. Because he wasn't educated," she said. "But that's not true. He does have value."
Stokes noted that Marissa had fractures in other bones, apparently suffered at least a week before she was hospitalized. Jason Gallaway knew, the judge said, "that his wife would look away no matter how flagrant his treatment became of their daughter."
The sentencing guidelines for first-degree murder by abuse called for 15 years to life in prison. Stokes cited aggravating factors, including a parole violation on an Oregon harassment conviction, as reasons he imposed the toughest possible penalty.
During his trial and after, Stokes said, Gallaway denied responsibility for his daughter's death and seemed not to grieve for her.
"He used the language of remorse, but his words were unconvincing," Stokes said.

Dad who raped own daughter gets 20 years (St. Louis, Missouri)
Words fail in even trying to describe a dad like RONALD LITTLE....

Child abuser who raped own daughter gets 20 years
By JENNIFER MANN
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ST. LOUIS | When the sex crimes detectives arrived at the young woman's house, she knew the secret she had buried for years was finally out.
“You found the pictures, didn't you?” she asked. Then she told them the whole story.
It's a sordid tale involving her father, Ronald Little, who was convicted of raping her mother at age 13, and who then turned his attention to the daughter. He molested her repeatedly as she was growing up and, through her teenage years, took pictures of the encounters so he could remember them. She was in her early 20s by the time police came to her door in 2010.
Little, 65, admitted to those allegations and was sentenced Friday in federal court to 20 years in prison for producing child pornography. But that's just the start of what he stands accused of.
Police and court records paint a picture of a man who continued to sexually assault little girls, including his own children, from 1969 until two years ago, when he was finally caught.
In St. Louis Circuit Court, Little is accused of repeated sexual assaults of the daughter at the center of the federal pornography case, along with another daughter and a grandchild. The Post-Dispatch does not identify sexual assault victims.
Little apparently documented the abuse, according to prosecutors, who say his meticulous notes on each encounter provided authorities with the evidence they needed to charge Little in 2010 with 107 counts of sexual assault, ranging from incest to sodomy.
It was the granddaughter who finally broke the silence. And when police went to where Little lived, in the basement of his 82-year-old mother's St. Louis home, they found the notes: on stacks of bundled and bound paper, several inches thick, and in journals. They also found 156 illicit photos, an 11-inch knife with knuckle grips, and a Smith & Wesson revolver with ammunition, according to court records. At the time, according to court records, Little had fathered 20 children and owed more than $100,000 in unpaid support.
Since those charges were brought, four other women have come forward to say they were also sexually assaulted by Little when they were young, according to police and court records. In all four cases, there was a point shortly after the abuse when the alleged victim told someone she trusted, but nothing came of the allegations.
In three of those cases, prosecutors have since been unable to issue charges because the statute of limitations had expired. The other case is pending in circuit court.
Mary Fox, head of the public defender's office in St. Louis and Little's attorney on the state case, declined comment, citing a gag order issued by the judge.
ALLEGATIONS OVER DECADES
In 1983, the family of a 13-year-old confronted the girl about her growing belly. She told them she had been raped and impregnated by Little, her aunt's boyfriend. The girl's mother called St. Louis police.
The girl later told authorities the sex was consensual, and Little, who lived in St. Louis, was convicted the next year of first-degree sexual abuse and received a one-year suspended sentence and five years' probation.
It was one of the few times a child's allegations regarding Little would be acted upon, police reports reveal.
Nonetheless, Little and the girl maintained a relationship, and within a few more years, after she reached the age of consent, they had two daughters — the ones Little is now accused of raping.
In 1992, the St. Louis County Division of Family Services, which is under what is now called the Missouri Department of Social Services, learned that one of the girls had contracted chlamydia, according to St. Louis police detectives. Testing also showed her younger sister had gonorrhea.
Both girls, ages 4 and 5, told caseworkers that “Butch” had touched them inappropriately. It does not appear that he lived with them, but that he visited their mother's Pine Lawn home.
The girls were removed from the home and placed in emergency foster care. But detectives have learned that within a couple of years, they were back at their mother's house, where the abuse by Little allegedly continued.
It's unclear why authorities didn't take action against Little then.
Seth Bundy, communications director for the Missouri Department of Social Services, said state law prohibits the department from confirming, denying or commenting on specific cases or allegations it receives. He did say, however, that all allegations of possible criminal behavior are investigated with police.
St. Louis and St. Louis County police have no records of investigations or sexual abuse complaints related to Little during that time. Pine Lawn police did not respond to inquiries.
MORE WOMEN COME FORWARD
Four women have come forward since Little's 2010 arrest to allege a host of sexual abuse.
The women told police similar tales of being abused at a very young age — as young as 4 — and telling relatives or others of the abuse, but it's unclear if law enforcement authorities learned of the allegations until the women came forward as adults.
One told police she was raped repeatedly in 1969 and 1970 after she was plied with candy, teddy bears and promises of ice cream. She told her sister, but they didn't tell anyone else. The girl eventually became a police officer to help other victims.
Another woman told police that “Butch” repeatedly raped her in the bathroom at her day care at the Hyde Park Community Center in 1972, when she was 4. Police reports indicate Little had worked at the day care for several years, though it is unclear whether he was employed there at the time of the alleged attack.
Little has been charged with abusing one of the girls from 1996 to 1999. For the three other women who came forward recently, the statute of limitations has passed for the alleged crimes.
It wasn't until September 2010 that police went knocking on Little's door, on the 2200 block of University Street, in St. Louis. One of his grandchildren had reported years of sexual abuse by Little through her preteen years. That's when they found the evidence of the alleged rapes of the daughters, and after those charges were issued, publicity about the case brought the other women forward.
A MOSTLY EMPTY COURTROOM
Little's sentencing Friday in federal court was quick and quiet, before a mostly empty courtroom. He shuffled in, ankles shackled and head down. His lawyer, Kevin Curran, had already agreed with prosecutors on a stipulated sentence of 20 years. Speaking to the judge, Curran called it “a severe and harsh punishment” given the single count of producing child pornography he was being sentenced on. A firearms charge was dropped as part of his guilty plea agreement.
Curran also pointed to Little's age, and the pending state charges, as reasons the 20 years was sufficient. If Little were to be released eventually, he'd be on lifelong supervised release and would have to abide by an array of restrictions on where he could live and work, and whom he could associate with. If he is convicted of the 107 charges in state court, it's unlikely he would ever be released.
Little spoke only once during the federal court hearing — a quick “no” when the judge asked him if he had anything to say.

PHOENIX - A 25-year-old father has been arrested on suspicion of shaking his 3-month-old son, causing him severe brain injury.
Benjamin Shaw has been arrested on one count of child abuse.
Late Thursday night, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the area of Greenway and 7th St for a baby in distress.
The 3-month-old baby boy was having a seizure and was taken to the hospital. Doctors determined that the baby had been shaken.
"We don't have a lot of history to show he's done this in the past, but that's the problem with shaking your child, particularly a 3-month-old. I mean they are very very fragile at that age and it's certainly just not acceptable," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Detectives talked to Shaw, who said he became upset and shook the baby. The baby's mother and grandmother had gone to the store at the time. Another child, a 5-year-old daughter, was home with Shaw.
The baby remains in critical but stable condition.

Dad charged with abusing 29-day-old infant son during visitation; mom loses custody to DSS (Hendersonville, North Carolina)
We see this over and over again. Young fathers (i.e. sperm donors) who were never married to the mother of the child and with no real evidence of family commitment (i.e. "relationship" didn't even last through the pregnancy) getting visitation anyway. It's usually not clear in newspaper articles like this whether this visitation is court-ordered or at the mother's discretion. But "discretion" doesn't mean much when mothers routinely lose their custodial rights for appearing "uncooperative" or "unwilling" to "co-parent" with someone who may never been much more than a fling.
Combine that with 1) the hot-headed testosterone of youth; and 2) lack of experience with newborns (i.e. "frustration") and you have a seriously dangerous and unstable situation.
Notice that Mom has lost custody to DSS even though the abuse was apparently committed by the father and at his home. This is a pattern we often see. Fathers are virtually NEVER held accountable for leaving the kids with a mentally ill/addicted/abusive mother, girlfriend, or step. Mothers, on the other hand, nearly always are. Even when they were battered and threatened themselves. Or even when the abuse took place during Daddy's visitation.
This mother dutifully reported the abuse to DSS only to lose the baby to the same. So much for being responsible.
Daddy is this case is identified as ANTHONY GENE TAYLOR.

The Henderson County Sheriff's Office has charged a Hendersonville man with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury after a 29-day-old baby boy suffered multiple fractures and external bruising in February.
Detectives arrested Anthony Gene Taylor, 21, of 51 Bobcat Lane, Hendersonville, today on the charge, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. The charge stemmed from a report by Henderson County DSS and subsequent investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
Taylor is the child's father, according to Capt. Frank Stout.
Stout did not know the child's condition. He said the child's mother reported the abuse to DSS after the infant had a visit with Taylor. Stout could not comment on the couple's relationship status, but said they had “parted ways” soon after the child was born.
The child is in the custody of DSS.
Taylor was in jail for a probation violation when he was charged Wednesday, Stout said.
According to N.C. Department of Justice records, Taylor was convicted of shoplifting and larceny on July 8, 2011. Records show the shoplifting offense took place on May 7, 2011 and the larceny occurred May 12, 2011. Stout said Taylor's probation was revoked in February and he was sentenced to jail time.
Taylor is being held on $150,000 bond for the child abuse charge and is scheduled for a first appearance in court Thursday.

OAKLAND, Calif.—An Oakland father who told detectives he placed his infant son's head between couch cushions to stop him from crying has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the boy's death.
The Oakland Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/GJ656V) 28-year-old William Thunderhawk pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for the sentence handed down Tuesday.
Thunderhawk was originally charged with murder and assault in Wambli Thunderhawk's December 2010 death.
Thunderhawk's public defender Eric Mirzaian says his client never intended to hurt the child. Mirzaian said Thunderhawk appears to have a cognitive disability and has suffered depression over the death that led to at least two suicide attempts in jail.
An autopsy found the baby had injuries consistent with suffocation as well as three broken ribs from Thunderhawk's attempts to revive him.
